Idle screw

hey guys,

I took my 500F to get its first service done and ever since i got it back, its been idling at 3000-3500RPMS. I just want to know where the idle screw on the carb is, as i want to turn it down a notch. If you have a pic, it would be even better. Thanks.

Go to the righthand side of the bike and peer through the gap behind the cylinders and it's a white/grey nylon-plastic gismo designed to be adjusted by hand. Mine is not an "F" but I am fairly sure it's the same. There is a pic in the owners manual. I am willing to bet guru-you-know-who comes up with a better picture.

As you can see, the idle screw is in between the two carbs ... although I believe it's a bit closer to the right-hand one.  I always use my right hand to adjust it.

hey, thank you so much. By the way, whats the drain spout and the drain screw for. And fo increase RPMs, is it the same as tighting something.
I.E: To increase RPMs, turn to the right. TO decrease RPMs, turn to the left? thanks again

If you ever take your carbs off the bike (to clean, rejet, reset float height, whatever) you will want to drain all of the fuel out first.  That's what the spout and screw are for.  But you can also use them to check your float height without taking ANYTHING apart.  (See the link in my previous post.)

That's right.  Since the screw is "upside down" you will mess yourself up if you think about it too deeply.  But if your hand will just do its normal "tightening" motion you can increase the RPMs with hardly any thought at all!

And if you forget which way is which?  Just turn it one way or the other and watch the tachometer.  It will give you immediate feedback.
