Tachometer Just Stopped Working

My tachometer just suddenly stopped registering RPMs.

I tightened the cable nuts at both ends of the cable and checked to see if the internal cable is spinning, which it is.  But it still doesn't seem to work.  The light works though?  Any have any thoughts on this one?  Thanks much.

Even if the cable looks and feels fine, make sure that the little square crimp on end pieces are very securely crimped to the cable.  My cable worked fine by hand but at engine rpms those little things would slip and keep it from working.
I just squeezed them on a little harder with vise grips, and they've held for 1000's of miles.

Hope that helps.. :dunno:

The GS500 is the safest bike on the planet, it can just barely kill you.

Thanks!  I'll check on this tonight!

the next thing to try is to disconnect it.  This happened to me, and I pulled it off, pulled on the end of the cable, and half of the cable came out.   :x

so it's not at all farfetched to think that your cable actually broke.  that's what I'd check.  you only need to pull one end off to check that.

Then if that doesn't seem to be the case, try taking both sides off, spin the cable, and see if spinning one side spins the other... another way to tell if it's broke, even if it somehow doesn't come out.

failing that, maybe pulling it off and putting it back on will fix the problem. =]

Great news! I just saved a bundle on car insurance by switching to a motorcycle!

I've removed the cable and it's all in one piece and not kinked up or broken.  Though it spins freely inside the cable, I cleaned and lubed it.  I removed the cable as inserted in the tactometer and rev'ed the bike to see if the cable spun at the tactometer end; it did.  Is it possible that the tactometer where mounted with the speedometer may be "stripped"?  I removed the tact and to see if it too appeared OK, and it does without any visiable wear and tear.  The bike is only 2 1/2 years old and isn't ridden rough - too much.  Any other suggestions before I actually purchase a new tachometer?  Thanks all for you input!
