Has anyone tried lowering the footpegs?

As I am slowly reassembling my bike, I have been looking at some of the things I don't  like and trying to figure out how to fix them.  One of the things I have been the most unhappy with is the position of the foot pegs.  I am fairly happy with the fore/aft position, I would just like to get them a couple of inches lower.  Has anyone tried this?  If so, how did you do it?

I have wondered the same thing. I am 6'2" and have 2 very well used knees. It would be nice to relaxe the position at least another 1/2".

Maybe what you guys are looking for could be had in a swap to another bike's footpegs or aftermarket.  Check Pablo's site, he's got a couple swaps photo-documented that look like they'd be lower without losing much, if any ground clearance in the turns.  I know you definitely don't want to swap to F2 rear-sets, that gives you about an inch back and 1/2 to 1 inch higher.

I installed some solid aluminium rear pegs off a Yamaha 600 in the brackets for the drivers pegs - reguired a bit of time with a grinder to get them to fit.  This resulted in about a 1 inch lower foot position.  I moved the shift lever one spline and re-adjusted the brake lever and switch.  At the same time there is actually more ground clearence since the pegs are shorter.  I have not noticed any excessive buzy-ness in the pegs - but most of my rides are relatively short - only a few miles in town to work and maybe 30-40 miles at a time just riding.

A friend of mine made something for his bike (not a GS) . I  emailed him asking to send me a pic....

Essentially you just make an offset mount that mounts where the regular peg goes and the peg mounts to it and lets it drop down more.....
Will let you know if/when I get the pics to give you an idea of what I'm talking about.

Do you remember what type of yamaha 600?  That sounds like it may be the simplest solution.  I don't mind giving up a little cornering in exchange for a riding position that lets me ride longer in greater comfort.  Pablo does have some pictures of katana pegs, but I am not sure 1/2 inch will be enough.

Yeah, I know what you mean about knees.  They hurt enough sometimes that I want to whack them with a hammer.

If the footpegs were an inch lower, you could compensate by upgrading the rear shock.  I bet even a Kat600 shock would get you 1/2" of that back.

Another solution is to build-up the seat a bit (and maybe raise the bars to match).
You cannot escape our master plan!

Sorry, do not remember which one - Last winter I took off one of the GS pegs and went out to the local cycle junk yard and looked through boxes of old pegs until I found some that looked like they would be close to a fit and where the top surface was the lowst (relative to the mounting hole) that I could find - they were marked as "yamaha 600" in magic marker -

Most sport bikes rear pegs mount the same way as the GS front pegs - but the width of the mounting and the shape of the piece that fits into the bracket is different - you should be fine so long as you find some where that part is larger than the GS peg - and that the relationship of the mounting hole to the foot surface is good.  Of course the grinding gets them to match the stock piece and fit into the bracket.

I have the pics ( Just got them) of the lowered pegs.

I don't have a free pic host anymore.... so if you want them PM me with your email -Or I'll email them to someone (WHERE'S Kerry?!?!!? hehehhe) who can host them.

Yeah, this post is from right after the GS500F was introduced! Must have been an exciting time on the forum.

That said, Mr72 has lowered his footpegs recently -- maybe he can chime in or you could check out his build thread.

Knight designs sells lowering footpegs for the gs500 or at least they used to.

I lowered mine by switching to CBR F3 rear-sets (you just have to ream out one mounting hole to make them fit) which opened the door for cheap ebay lowering pegs.

Scroll about 1/2 way down the page... that's how I did it.

Below is a shot from my current project but essentially it's the same idea.  Took all of about 2 hours from start to finish.  I moved them back at the same time, but within obvious limitations you could change the shape of the adapter plate to suit your desired end result. You may need to lengthen the wiring for the brake switch depending on how far you go.  Spend the extra $ and get an extra set of low profile OE mounting bolts for the adapter plate or you will catch your feet on them every time you brake or shift.

I want Bruce Culvers plates. Will he bang out a set for me.

The Knights do look good. Not cheap at $164 shipped and have no rubber pads.

I have lowering plates on my DL, more like a $50 item.

He will definitely send you the pattern.  Lol.

Let me check and see if I still have the materials. If I do, it wouldn't take me long to cut out a set and drill and tap them.  Cleaning them up and painting would be up to you... that is my least favorite part anyway.

Give me a day or two. Are you in the US?

B.

Ji B.,

I am in the Boston USA area.
