Why? Perfect idle unless I've been riding, then it stalls.

OK, If I start the bike (hot or cold) it idles OK as long as I don't ride it.  It will just sit there idling at 1200 all day long.

Now, if I go for a ride (either long or short) when I come to a stop the idle goes down to zero and the bike quits.  I have to continually goose the throttle or give it some choke to keep it running.

If it stalls or if I turn it off, when I start it back up it idles perfectly.

What's the deal here?

Thanks!

This happened on my maxim when I had a super rich condition. I'm sure someone with more experience knows whats going on, but check the plugs and see what color they are.

Choke also lets air in... but yes other than that he's right... over rich. Lean will set the idle racing high... now if it revs to 4K and drops slowly and drops and drops and drops till it dies... that = vacuum leak.... if it drops fast and below the idle mark and promptly down to 0... that is rich.
Cool.

I seem to be having the same problem. The difference with mine though is that the spark plugs don't show evidence of a rich or lean mixture. If you figure it out, let me know. Otherwise let's compare notes  :)
