Since there are so many questions on the electrical aspect of starting I thought I would draw a simplified schematic to make it easier to see how the circuit works.  It turned out so well that I am publishing(?) it.

I hope this, in conjunction with the available wiring diagrams and Kerry's great photos, will make troubleshooting easier.

I have separated the relay control windings from the associated contacts to make the drawing easy to read.

I show and describe the initial state of the circuit components (operated, unoperated, closed, open, etc.) as they would be in a typical normal state.

Then go through a typical start up sequence.

If any one sees  any glitchs, let me know.

Good reading folks.

i've found that the best way to troubleshoot the starter circuit is work your way back from the starter with a volt meter and a continuity checker (or ohm meter)

Great diagram, John!  It's destined to become one of the "standards" around here.  :thumb:
