for the winter i will be painting the bike and i know it's recomended to fill up the gastank to prevent rust but my tank will be off the bike so it will have to be empty....what should i do so the tank doesn't rust?

bcutrufelli

just make sure you add salt to the tank it will drawe all the moisture out
just kidding

I don't see why it would rust if you keep it indoors with all of the gas removed.  Just keep it dry and in a humidity free environment.  And if you really want to get high tech, tape a bunch of those silica gel packets to a string and hang the string in your tank.  Don't ask me where to find silica gel packets, though, cuz I know but I wont tell you...

Oh yeah... it shouldn't rust all that much in one winter, but a good way to combat a rusty tank(old VW owner chiming in...) is with a good in-line fuel filter.  Believe me, those things work.  I see huge chunks in there(clear plastic type) that don't even look like they would fit thru the fuel line.  Litmus test:  on my VW I run an in-line filter to the fuel pump(pre-carb) and then one from the fuel pump to the carb.  I have replaced the one from the tank about four times in two years because it was clogged with huge chunks, and the other one looks brand new and has never been changed.  So put an in-line fuel filter in the line that goes to the carbs.

LOL, I was just gonna ask the same question.  I was going to keep my tank full but decided to empty out today and put it in the nice warm basement, the bad thing was when I dropped the darn thing and dented it and chipped the paint.  :x   Oh well not much I can do now.   Also, how do you get all of the gas out?  Ive still got a little in there.

it's very hard.....i cleaned my tank about 8 months ago and it took a while to get the gas out.....take out the petcock and tilt the gastank to the left and back, but not too much.....and then movie it forward and back...it's gonna take a while

sprint_9

Yea I was hoping I wouldnt have to take the petcock out but I think thats the only option.
