First let my start by saying there are no good sites for finding info on my bike. At least none that come close to this place. That is why I am asking for help here. If you know a good site please post.
I bought the bike last week. The seller informed that the speedomoter did not get its cable installed after the last brake job. When I got home I inspected the uninstalled cable and found that the internals did not spin. So I bought a new cable this weekend and put it on. Now the spedometer works. It seems to show the speed ok but it only goes upt 85mph   It also is making a high pitched sqeal sometimes. It seems to come and go intermidently. I am guessing I will have to open everything up and lather everything in grease. Unless you guys have a better suggestion.
Also, I was hoping that the speedo cable would fix the tachometer which was also not working. No such luck. Acording to the Clymer manual it is all electronic and the manual seems to be very vauge about how to diagnose and fix it. I may try getting a Haynes manual in hopes that it make things clearer.
Any thoughts would be very appreciated.

GPZ 550 is a cool bike.  No clue on the clocks, for you.  Sorry.

the speedo works on dual inertia wheels....i think is the proper technical blurbage.
the best thing to do is the spray some carb cleaner on the mechanism and get the old crud off
then a light oil or silicon lube
test by installing the cable in a drill

i can get you a set of CR roundslides for the bike...set up for a gpz550

i think they are 200-250 for the rack of 4 carbs

Thanks all, for not slamming my non GS. I will try and post some pics this week.

JakeD, thanks I am really falling in love with the old Kawi.

Werase, you rock dude. I will give the cleaning and lubing a try. I am guessing roundsides are a type of carb by your description.
Currently, it is fitted with a set of Mikunis which have to be aftermarket or from another model because I dont think Mikuni came stock back then. It also has a custom 4-1 pipe which looks like the stock unit but with a shorter can. Whoever jetted it must have had a clue because it starts first try and pulls strong thoughout the range. Of course I have not driven a stock version to compare it to. So for now I will probably not mess with the carbs but who knows tell me more anyways.
