Leather Care Products/Procedures

Well, I got a new jacket this weekend and it's all leather. Other than shoes, I have never owned anything made of leather before and I am quite clueless as to how to care for it. When I bought my jacket (at an IMS show) the vendor told me to look on their website. While there are care instructions on their website, they reccomend using belstaff leather care, which they did not have at the IMS booth and is not for sale on their website. This is the most expensive piece of clothing I have ever had and I want to make sure that I take good care of it.

How do you care for your leathers? What do you do? How often? What products do you use?

Anytime I get a leather jacket (whether it's a motorcycle jacket or normal jacket) I spray a thin coat of this leather treatment spray. It protects from any kind of weathering. I only need to do it about once a year. If I get a scuff on it (from a doorway or something like that), I just buff in any leather polish on it and the scuff usually goes away.

In general, I wouldn't worry too much. You don't have to do a lot of maintenance with leather motorcycle jackets. They're a much tougher and thicker leather with larger pores (pig skin, cow skin, etc...) than a good normal jacket (lamb skin, etc...) that is much thinner and with much tinier pores. Motorcycle jackets are made to be thrown around.
