Ahhh! GS died on the freeway

I was driving on my way home from work uphill on a freeway with the throttle wide open.  My bike started hesitating like I was running out of gas.  So start pulling over to the right side and rotate the petcock to reserve.  I get onto the shoulder and the bike straight up dies!  I Checked my gas tank, plenty of gas.  No leaking fluids, no strange sounds or smells.  So I try and fire her up... no go.  Choke, start, No go.  Put it on prime... fires up on the first try.  I drive around with it on prime, drives fine.  Put it back on ON, drives fine...  
any idea why it died, then continued to run after a minute or two?

is there any reason why running it wide open would cause it to die?

Fuel starvation?

Having to turn on choke and prime to get it started is sure fire sign of having emptied all the gas in the float bowls. I know because ive been there.   Maybe going up the hill put the tank on a slant and the level fell below reserve?

Looking into a tank can be very deceptive, very often when you reach that "res" moment there seems to be plenty of fuel sloshing around.

Sounds like classic fuel starvation. The GS petcock doesnt always flow enough fuel for WOT applications, IE, riding on the freeway.

Try moving the petcock tab to PRI and riding around a while. This bypasses the vacuum valve in the petcock and lets fuel directly into the carbs. Do it around the block first, if your floats arent in good shape the bowls could overflow and you could leak gas. If things check out, however, its okay to ride around in prime for a while.

After that, get the tank, airbox, and petcock out of there and replace the vacuum line running from your carbs to the petcock. That seems to have solved all of my problems with fuel starvation.,
