Quite startling.  I was looking for the deer and didn't notice it 'til it stepped into the bike.

Wonder if the rider had the same problem or just didn't figure the deer would actually cross the bike's path.

Gosh...

I'm not trying to be insensitive to the loss of life of the deer, but...

The camera made a right jab straight to the cheek.

This is why it just plain sucks to have monocular vision.

I'm sure he didn't even see the deer.  I tried looking for the deer very closely, frame by frame,  and couldn't see it until just before it reached the road.  It looks like it was quite overcast and deer tend to blend in very well to their environment (not to mention that they have this tendency to bolt out of nowhere)  Lucky it wasn't a buck!  Add sharp antlers to that equation!!!!!  OUCH

Scary thing is, I ride places like that all the time.  Where was that?  I've HAD deer run out no more than 50 feet in front of me.  Yes, they just come out of the trees running.  From first sight to middle of the road about 3-4 leaps and a second maybe less.  You CAN'T avoid them if they jump out in front of you.  I see them all the time mostly grazing at the side of the road.  The one that was 50 feet away ran between the car ahead of me and my bike.  If I had been right on that cars ass I'd have nailed the deer.  I've had total about 5 deer run out in front that I could see.  Most were quite a ways away.  I'm sure that it hurts big time to hit one.  Ever see what they do to a car?

I have heard that if you could turn off your headlamps the deer would 'see' you better, perceiving you as a threat, than zoning out on your headlight.

My cousin was a passenger in a car that was doin about 75 on the interstate late at night, and a deer ran out and went straight through the passenger side of the windshield and sandwiched him in between the seat and the deer. If the seat back had broken he'd be dead, and he was in to hospital for a month and a half and had to have 6 or 7 reconstructive surgeries on his face. He got MESSED up

This was a huge problem in the UP of Michigan when I lived up there.  I know a lot of people that refused to ride a night and durring the rut for that reason.  If happens fast and hurts bad.

About 3 weeks after I started riding I had my first deer incident. luckily it ended with the bike still shiny side up and the deer in one piece. However I can honestly say it had more to do with luck than skill. that deer was out on the road in a heartbeat and I ended up locking  the rear brake as it flew *just* past me. I kept my balance (it was a straightaway) and was able to let off the rear and then ride to a stop. It all happened so fast I can't say as I would've been able to do anything differently if I'd had more experience. I'm just glad I didn't hit the brake a second later.

There's a bait and shoot program going on where I live to try and get the deer population under control, and I totally hope they keep it up. pretty regularly there's news reports of people protesting the policy and I can't help but wonder how they'd feel about it if it was their loved one center-punching 180 lbs of full grown whitetail on their way home from work.

Definitely good stuff to have in the front of your mind as riding season starts to kick into full swing (soon hopefully where I am):
I read recently that the deer population in the US is ~25 million, up from ~10 million in the 1980s.
NY state claims a population of ~1 million by itself, with 60,000 car and truck run-ins per year.

Food for thought when you start to zone out about what a nice ride you're having. Let's keep it safe out there, friends.

Regards,
Riz

Where in the UP did you live?  I almost never ride at night, except through town.  Pretty country up here, but lots of forest, turns, and hills that could be hiding deer
