wondering where I went...

read the email my roomie sent me this week:

QuoteI'd like to talk to you this evening regarding our current living situation.  David and I have bothed noticed, as you obviously have, that our situation has been becoming increasingly strained.  I'm not exactly sure what has brought on the strain other than my preference for the apartment to be a home and not a crash pad, but it's time we all sit down and sort this out before we all end up exploding.

My suggestion is this, and we can talk about it more tonight, but I suggest that we all agree to not step on each others toes.  This means that we will not make one more comment about anything you do.  We will keep to ourselves, and not talk to you unless you start the conversation.  We will stay in our room unless specifically we need to do something in the kitchen or living room.  You will be welcome to bring friends, dogs, or whatever over so long as they do not make a mess or are cleaned up after, and, in the case of animals, it is cleared with the management of the complex.

For the sake of your convenience and ours we will allow you to continue living in peace and quiet at the apartment at the current rent rate until May 31st (when school will be out), then we would like you to find someplace else to live.

We'll idscuss it more tonight, but that's my suggestion.

My response

Quotehi melissa,

Since we hadnt had a chance to talk as yet, I decided email might be a good idea to pass on the message.

I understand your point of view and hence as of saturday/sunday of this week (19/20) i will be moving out to my new apt. I got a piece of paper that you two have to sign, but once signed i will be officially out of your hair.

Thanks

Manjul

I have been depressed all this time with my roomies antics. Its been driving me nuts. But I was going to sit it in. Now I dont care, i move to a new place and I am done.. woot!

cant wait for saturday. Ofcourse i need a roomie in my new 2bd 2ba, but only because i cant afford the 900 rent by myself. Though if i work a bit i can.

edit: mind you, i didnt do anything to start this problem... it was on their side to start with.

jeez, man.  where'd you find a 2bd/2ba for $900 a month?
when my lease is up in May, i'm hoping to find a studio and am not sure i'll be able to find one for less than $800.
btw, i hate strained roommate relations.  i currently have effectively no relationship with my roommate.  which is why i'm looking for a studio or single.

Its a much better investment to just have a house built. Imagine how much money you will be spengin a month in rent? You can make that same payment towards a mortgage, plus when you want to sell, it will have doubled in value, maybe trippled depending on your area. Thats What i plan to do when its time for me to move out simply because its a good invest me and more cost effective.

Shoot, ya'll need to move South my mortgage is $600/month on a 3 bd/2ba.  ;) And I have my brother as a roommate so I figure if I've lived with him the first 25 years of my life I'm good to go for a few more. lol  Of course we daily tell each other how much we dislike the other, but it's all good.

not necessarily a good idea in this area, though if you wait a couple of years the time might be right.

lots of experts are expecting the housing bubble to burst again in the L.A. area within the next couple of years.

around here there's a decent chance your house won't be worth half what you paid for it.

now, financial forecasts are much less reliable than weather forecasts, so take this with a grain of salt.

the suppression of interest rates by the fed has fueled the inflation of housing prices.

i wouldn't recommend buying a house in the L.A. area in the near future.  you may get stuck holding the bag.

If you were wondering where you went wrong it was moving in with a girl ( or 2?).

Yea Housing bubble ... yup ... Northern CA and so Cal ... both over heated, all the IT jobs went to India and hence those places just are over crowded and over priced. But your house being worth 1/2 ... nice time to leave the bank with the house though ... any more than 10% less and I'd bail ...
Cool.

If you were talking about Phoenix a year ago I'd say you're right, but with prices escalating out of control it doesn't make a lot of sense at this time.

Remember Manjul is going to school & stuff.  He needs to wait till he's out and finds a place to settle down.

so, the other two roomies are a couple, and you effectively became the odd man out?  was it like that all along, or did that situation develop after you all moved in together?

My humble opinion... roomates suck, period. I hated it every time I tried it. Heck, marriage was easier than a roomate.  If your going to have to share a place with someone because you can't afford it by yourself, get a girlfriend that has a job.

ditto on the roommates suck, but moving in with your girlfriend as a solution :o   that could mean more trouble than he started with:)

Damn.  The place I am moving to in New Jersey is $1955 a month, and that doesn't include the $125/mo for the garage (which I was able to negotiate for free).  It does have a free movie theater, and free breakfast monday-friday, oh, and free premium cable, free DVD rentals, free gym (with LCD tv's all over), sauna, business center with plasma tv video conferencing, on-site spa, and concierge service...  Wait...  What was I bitching about just now??

Yeah... well.... i have one bedroom.  SO THERE!

I would stay, just to tick them off. I would proceed to walk around in tighty whitys picking lint from my belly buton and scratching my butt at the same time. I would make a pass at all of the females who came over. I would have very late parties and leave messes everywhere. I would make loud noises late at night in my bedroom.
The next day I would really get nasty. Revenge can be fun.

I think it really depends, i know a couple of close friends and we could easily live together. But weve known each other forever, all have similar lifestyles and similar values so not one person is going to grate on the other people.

If you think about it its very hard to match two people who study at the same university or whatever to become roommates. Think of all the variables, you have to get on great for it to be anymuch enjoyable - therefore you have to build friendship. They have to be brought up the same as you so that you both have the same levels of respect for everything, you've both gotta do similar things even if not together so that if one of you has a party or some friends over it doesnt wind the other one up.

Its amazing that half of the roommates even get on!
