So I was out on some sweet twisties and the sky started to cloud up so I turned around to head home and while I was going around a bend my bike started lurching, I was applying the throttle smoothly and I wasn't toughing the brake or clutch, then after this scary corner lurching action I was trying to accelerate along a straight and it kept lurching so I switched my tank to RES but I knew I still had some gas and then it died so I pulled over and checked the bike out, nothing wierd, a 1/4 tank of gas. Now I was planning on lubing my chain when I got back from this ride as it will be about 600kms since I did before and my oil is full but do you have change the oil everytime (how many km/miles?) or do you just top it up every ##kms/miles? This is my first bike, and I don't know when I should lube the chain / change the oil...I assumed it was every 600kms and when ever the oil is low but I may be wrong and I dont' want a repeat of today...Thanks

officially, you are supposed to change oil and filter every 4000 miles ( http://www.gstwin.com/every4000miles.htm ), but i like to do it more often... 2-3K.

clean/lube chain every 600miles.

i'd check your fuel hoses too...

On a pre-2001 you have about a 4 gallon tank - of which approximately the last gallon is reserve - so, it was probably just time to switch to reserve.

If you are quick when it starts to chug, you can switch it to reserve, and it will recover.  It takes mine about 10 seconds to quit shuddering.  But if you wait to switch to RES for 5 or 10 seconds after it starts to shudder, then you may be too late.  In that case, it will probably kill if you don't switch straight to PRIme.

I have had that done to me a couple times but never while riding twisties but I did forget to get gas after riding home after switching to reserve.  Haha and then my bro took it out the next day and it started lurching on him.  he was sorta mad...  Oh ya but I change my oil every 2000 miles.  and also the oil filter at the same time.

Some do it on a full tank of gas.  Mine did every once and awhile.  Fuel delivery is low and the carb empties.  Switching to res didn't help my problem, but switching to PRI did.  Fuel starvation is a common, but yet to be definitively solved problem.  Probablly fuel line/filter related or something to do with the vacuum.

Weird deal, that chugging to a stop crap, it is.  Every time I head north on the 5 out of San Diego on my GS it starts chugging at the base of a certain hill, and I end up slowing way down to let it recover.  Has done it consistently, full tank, half tank, you name it.  PITA, I tell ya.  Oh yeah, bike is stock barring 9.6K miles, oil changes every 4K, ignition advancer and 3 holes drilled in stock pipe's baffle.

Haven't been down there in a while, so it might have been a weird kink in the hose from earlier experiments with taking the tank off, but I am almost positive it's something funky with the system itself.  Stock hoses here.

Probably not much help if any at all, but thought it was worth noting the specifics of the hill in SD.  Hasn't done it anywhere else, unless I'm actually short on petrol.
