Good day again, I was out on the twisties again today, I lubed up my chain, filled 'er up with gas, oil level was good and it was a beautiful golden colour.  When I shift through the gears everything is nice and smooth until I get to 6th and when I shift into it there is a weird grinding noise if I try and accellerate, it's not too loud but when I tucked in to listen to her it was there, it drives fine in 5th but as soon as I hit 6th it makes the noise, so I drove it home in 5th...I really need a vehicle for my job this summer to get back and forth so is it worth me figuring this out or should I break down and....cry/sell my bike and buy a car? I don't have time between the end of exams and beginning of work to fix it so I really need some good advice, I'm really pissed/stressed with this, exams and the possibility of not making it to work and getting fired.... Sorry about the rant...

Just for clarification, you could actually get the bike shifted into 6th, evidenced by an engine RPM drop compared to running at the same speed in 5th, is that correct?

Not familiar with the GS innards, so I'm staying out of this one, but I can wish you the best of luck with it!

For what it's worth, mine's been doing that for a year and hasn't stopped working yet.  :dunno:

What rpm are you running in 6th when you hear the noise?
Common sense in not very common.

It will shift into 6th and I'm shifting into 6th at about 5000RPM and the grinding  sound only happens when I accelerate...

I would suspect that you are too low in the rpm band when you shift into 6th. Is it a grinding sound or is it just the bike bogging? How is the bike acting when you shift into 6th? Try shifting into 6th at 5500rpm.
The motorcycle is no longer the hobby, the skill has become the hobby.

good judgement trumps good skills every time.

It is a grinding sound and it seems to be bogging a little, I've tried accelerating but the grinding sound just gets worse...I will try shifting into 6th at a higher RPM, none of the other gears make this sound, is it possible that this gear is worn out and if so how long would it take to replace? and what's the cost of a gear/gear box?
