anyone know where i can pick up the basic manual for a 98 500e?  not the service one, but the free one that comes with a vehicle.  im totally new to the bike world and trying to get some basic knowledge...like whats the difference between the lock postition and P position on the ignition?  and what octane fuel i need.....
thanks

A dealer should be able to order you one, but I'm sure it would cost several dollars. As far as gas octane 87(american) would be right. The manual recommends a higher octane but it is a different rating system from what we use. It basically amounts to 87 if I'm not wrong.

As far as being new to the bike world you couldn't have picked a better bike to start out on. You will also have this large internet community as support so if your dealer is unhelpful someone here will come to your aid.

The lock position puts a bolt into the frame steering column to prevent turning of the front wheel. Call it an anti-theft mechansim albeit a poor one. Also NO power is applied anywhere to anything.

The "P" position is for parking and turns on the tail light and a "side"  or "position" light if you have one. My 90 does not have a side light. This is akin to some cars that leave a street side turn light on when parked to get the attention of drivers. Mercedes, etc.

Using "P" is an excellent opportunity to run down your battery. Consider the "P" position to stand for "push start my bike if left on too long".

I checked on a new owners manual at the Suzi shop here in Little Rock. They could order one for me at $12.00. Sounded high for a little pamphlet but if you want an original it'll cost ya, like everything else does there. Anyway I found the one my brother sent with the bike I bought from him so didn't need to order one after all. And 87 octane is the reccommended fuel.

There's the problem, you went to Doug Reynolds Suzuki. I never go into that dealership. Should try the one in Searcy or Conway.
