Hang out there, we may flame, but we don't hate.

My attitude is in serious need of readjustment, and I'm ok with that.

Good excuse...  My gonads are tiny for the closer ride on my GS.  My title is utilitarian, while your title is...  uh...  not sure...

Technicaly, leaving vehicles (inc bikes) in a public place with the engine idling is an offence in the UK if you are not sat behind the wheel or sat on the bike. The law will argue that you are not in full control of the vehicle. Ok its petty but any jobsworth cop looking to create an impression would have you for it. Are you sure its legal over in the USA?

annguyen1981

Yeah it's legal in the US.  Even police cruisers have a system installed where if they need to leave the car quickly, they can push a button and remove key without the car turning off.

Hmm...I feel that there is no real logical reason to worry about a bike running unattended.  The bike cannot simply "slip" into gear on its own, and even if it did, the poor little GS motor would die instantly without some throttle input.  I've accidentally kicked the bike into first while sitting on it, no clutch and no throttle.  The bike lurches and dies.  I don't believe that the bike could drive forward and hit anything.  At worst, it might fall off the side stand but I don't see how it's physically possible for the transmission (considering its design) to clunk into gear on its own.

Remote start is a great thing if you are in a hurry, or want to hop on the bike and go.  It helps get things closer to operating temperature, and most importantly circulates oil throughout the motor.  Remote start is an excellent feature for cold days on a fuel injected engine that can raise the idle (similar to using the choke) on its own.  On a carbureted motor, like the GS's, its usefulness is somewhat diminished on a cold day as choke input is usually needed.
