I've searched and found very few and mixed opinions. What if I were to change out my front sprocket to a 17 instead of the stock 16. I'm looking for something that will allow lower rpms on the highway and less shifting on city streets.

Any input on how well it works? And will I have to replace the chain (shouldn't have to, I think)

You will lose acceleration.
Common sense in not very common.

Are we talking night and day difference or just a little bit?

I read somewhere that anytime you replace a sprocket you should replace your chain.  I think it was in a recent 'Rider' mag.

Does anyone know where I can order a 17 sprocket to be shipped to Sweden?

I ran a 17T for a couple of years and the only time I really noticed the slight change in performance was while carrying a pillion.  The revs will sit about 500rpm lower in top gear.  You will need to slip the clutch a little bit to get away from standstill.  Otherwise it's good.  The only reason I've gone back to 16T is because I carry a pillion a lot more now.
