I want to put in a new air filter, oil filter, and change the oil on my bike when I get back home.

I wanted to know if there is anything better than K&N.  I hear very good things about them and by their price(about 45 bucks for an air filter) I believe they are top of the line.

I read someone say something about a drop in and a lunchbox one.  Are they even better?

Any other suggestions to keep the bike in tip top order when I get back?

the drop in wont make much of a difference (none at all performance wise with the restrictor ring and no rejet) however the lunchbox with a rejet and a pipe makes quite a bit of difference.  sounds great and a definate performance boost

So the lunchbox air filter makes it louder too?  I already have the exhaust.

not really louder, but if you put on luch box you will need to rejet to compensate for the large amount of air your carbs will be able to suck in. Otherwise you might end up with a lean condition.

Will it definitely be noticeable the extra power?  From lower rpms? or what?

What about just changing the jets and air filter, no change to the stock pipe?

i had just a pipe too.  sounded good but when i did the rejet and put the lunchbox on it was definately louder and more throaty.  i can actually hear air being sucked in the filter right between my legs

Wow, sounds great.  Do you think it's a better idea for my to do it myself or bring it to a shop to have it rejetted?

You can do it yourself. It is not difficult if you have some experience with working with carbs.

I know some will scoff at me for saying this, but I reccomend the Dyno Jet rejet kit. It has instructions and is easy.

One thing to remember, dont loose the little o-rings on the top of the diaphram, and use the stock plastic spacers on the new needles. If you just put in new jets and use stock needles then you do not need to worry about the spacers.

I would suggest though if you are going to go to the trouble to re-jet, then put an aftermarked exaust on it. The exaust section is where the most flow restriction is on a stock bike.

I don't have any experience with carbs! :(

Well I could get a friend or someone to help me.  I already have a V&H exhaust on it.  I wanted to get a nice air filter to go with it, but it sounds kind of hard.  I've read all the directions already.

i jumped in with no experience at all. i just went slow, followed some good directions and was careful.  honestly it didnt take me long at all.  it was really easy.  and to install the lunchbox just remove the airbox and put the lunchbox in place.  realllly simple.

I've already read that!!  hehe, I told you I already read the posts.  Yeah, I have the exhaust and wanted to put in the lunchbox K&N although I think the hard part is the little washers and stuff putting in the right size and all.

If boston was within driving distance of Dallas I would come help you. It really is not too hard to do. You remove the seat, the side pannels, and the tank. then you can reach in and get to the airbox and carbs.

You may want to invest in a clymer manual. If you do not feel totally comfortable then take it to a dealer, but they will most likely want to put in a dynojet kit. ~$80 plus labor.

just went to the DJ site, and I dont see a kit for '01. I see one for 89-00 and one for '04-05.

I guess the question is does your carbs have a pilot and a main, or pilot, mids, and mains.
