It's a bit ludicrous - like racing a 4-year-old to show you're faster.  It's obvious you are, and it does no good to risk a ticket to show it, so why bother?  If someone challenges me to a race, I just laugh and shake my head.

The bike typically ends up being faster anyway, and it's much more amusing to have them behind you when they're trying to race and you're just driving like normal.

Well, slow maybe by motorcycle standards, but it'll destroy an Acura.  I think most people don't want to race so much as see a motorcycle go crazy fast.  The rest are just your typical street race morons.  We need to put them in a giant walled enclosure with the people that put extended swingarms on GSXR-1000s and effectively remove them from society.

I've had some that didn't flat out ask to race but gave the look and I could tell they would blast off from the line, and sure enough they did. I know a few 3-way intersections where I can get against the side that doesn't have a street to the right and take them from the light. The limit on the street is 35, so I like to just get to 35 really quick and then cruise between there and 40 MPH. They do catch up and pass, but the meat of the race is already over.

So I've been riding a motorcycle for almost 3 weeks now, and it's pretty obvious to me that a motorcylce is much faster then a car. I'm not so good at accelerating from a dead stop. I usually just try to ease out the clutch so that I don't kill the bike, but I'm sure with a little practice I could get much faster. Also, getting over the 5K RPM limit will make a huge difference. That being said, I'd still never race anyone because I want to enjoy riding my motorcycle for a long time, and not crash it, or hurt, mame, or kill myself!!!!

I just thought it was funny becuase I was just putting along going the speed limit and keeping the RPM's down under 5K. Nothing that would say that I was looking to race!

Ok I am not rying to start anything but I will respond to your post.  THis guy was an idiot anyway trying to race in traffic exc.  BUT and there is a big but involved you may be suprised.  I have a GS and a modified rice burner car.  They are about even in 1/4 mile any more  my car would probably pull the gs badly.  Even in the 1/4 mile my car is ever so slightly faster.  Now this guy had an acura and may have been slightly retarded but there are tons of modified import cars that would tear a gs apart.  Not off the line because gs's are quick in that respect but in any signifigant race in a straight line.  That guy probably wanted to race you and have a kill story for his acura forum saying hey I beat a bike today.  In fact judging by his rice boy antics his story is already exagerated and his Honda buddies are giving him hi fives for beating you and saying how they wish they could have been there.

Hah, I had a guy in a Nissan Maxima try and race me once. There was no traffic, and we each had our own lane. But I am not the racer type either, so I didn't. Luckily, we didn't because there was a state tropper about a mile up the road running radar  :o  That coulda been bad..

And for about any ricer car to beat the GS or really any bike, it really does have to be SOUPED UP big time. The GS has a estimated 1/4 time of what? 13's? I'm not even sure, but I know it is close to a Dodge SRT-4, and the SRT-4 could smoke the average rice burner...unless they are juiced or have major engine work.  :dunno:

You can hop up Integras and Civics to truly silly levels.  But most of the folk who modify their cars intelligently and effectively also know enough to keep it on the strip or track.  Most of the road race/light-to-light types don't even know how to shift decently.

bcutrufelli

well maybe i dont even think the average person on a gs is running in the 13's

synchro

most people who see the faired versions cannot tell it from the 600s or 1000s.... but today a gas station attendent called my baby a fukin scooter!  Said it looked like a 100cc?!?!?!  Said its sooo much smaller than his friends 600.... and ive piloted 600s before and aside from the smaller tank and less aggressive riding position its pretty  much then same

Roadstergal,
Give me a break I meant maim myself. Next time I'll use a dictionary, or more likely spell check.

To everyone else,
I wasn't trying to say cars are way slower then bikes. This guys' car definitely had aftermarket exhaust, and he seemed to shift okay, I just thought he was an idiot. Also it was funny that the guy wanted to race me. I guess I still think of myself as newbi motorcyclist who just graduated from the MSF course, and not a seasoned sport bike rider. I mean come on here, I've had my bike for 2.5 weeks and I've never even seen a motor vehicle (car, bike, anything) race in person.

Ya know I have lived within 20 miles of Indianapolis my entire life and I have never seen a race in person.

i've raced my gs vs. cars once.

Lost.

I know of a guy who claims to have a 450HP Civic. But it is so heavily modified, you begin to wonder if it is even a civic anymore. If you buy a car and completely gut it, and put all aftermarket and hop everything up, it's hard to even consider it what it once was anymore.

Thats like taking a GS and stripping it down. Putting in a complete GSX-R engine, complete GSX-R drive train, nitrous, a turbo, etc. etc. yeah it would still be a GS so to speak, but...  :dunno:

I don't think the average ricer street-racer wanna be is capable of running their cars to their full potential either. If they could, they would go to the track where it actually means something.

A racer racing a non-racer is like a pro boxer beating up a hippie.

Not asking for it!

And to ajgs500 I will be visiting Indianapolis next week for work. I do consulting and usually work in the Seattle area, but we have client that is out in Indiana and so I'm heading out that way. Are there any other fun things to do in Indianapolis? I will have a car but no bike.

Fun things to do in Indy??????????  If you are into music and/or bars try to hit the Slippery Noodle.  It is the oldest bar in Indiana and has great blues music and a cool atmosphere.  Sports... check out the NCAA Hall of Fame or an Indy Indians(Triple A) baseball game or the IMS museum is cool too.  Lots of stuff to do I could better help you if I knew what you were into!!!

ajgs500
Thanks for the info. I'm into lots of stuff. Obviously I like motorcycles and airplanes. I'll check out the bar, I love blues music and own a guitar (notice I did not say play because I'm not very good!) I like movies, and food too! I also play golf, and am planning on bringing the sticks.

I will be there all week by myself so I'm just looking for things to do in case I get really bored and don't want to sit in the hotel. If the work at Thompson is light then I'll probablly play some golf and try to get out and see the town. If I'm working long hours then I'll probablly just keep it low key.
