Cheap Integrator Kit Install

There have been a few posts about doing the rear integrator without buying the kit for $90. I thought I'd get into detail on what to buy, what to do, and add some pics. So I am just in the beginning, so here we go.

Go to the store and buy the Reese Towpower Trailer Light Converter, Part #74209. I got it at GI Joes for $13.

Here is a picture of it:

Here's the side that I'll hook up to the wires coming from the bike (labled "to car"):

The side that I'll hook up to the wires coming from the brake cluster (labeled "to trailer"):

And the body of the unit:

So the wires are labeled like this:

To Car
Green- Rt turn
Red- Stop
Yellow- Left turn
Brown- Tail ( I don't think I'll use this one, right?)
White- Ground

To Trailer
Green- Right turn/ stop
Yellow- Left turn/ stop
Brown- Tail (Again, I think this isn't used)
White- Ground

Assuming that I'm correct about not using the Tail wire, it's basically a 4-into-3 converter. The ground is straight across, making it a 3-into-2 converter. So I will just need the left blinker power, right blinker power, and brake power. On the other side, I just need the right tail light power, and left tail light power. I'm ready!

So I'm going to bed. Tomorrow after work, I'll try and take pics as I go along. I think it'll be pretty easy. But then again, I probably just jinxed myself  :x

Awesome. Hope it turns out well. Take not only pictures but notes along the way to help us other guys install it if all goes well  :thumb:

For sure. It really seems simple (at least in my head... ), and I think it should turn out pretty nice. I believe I just need to locate the wires to the turn signals and the ones to the brake lights, and I should be set from there. I heard something about the possibility of the turn signals blinking faster unless you get a capacitor or some crap, but we'll see. I've got that and painting the windscreen black as my two projects. I picked up the Krylon Fusion paint for plastics, and hope to get it as nice as tdan553527's:

I'll post after work.

The turn signals will flash faster when you apply the brakes due to less resistance with a turn signal bulbs removed. It can be fixed by adding a couple of resistors. Use a 10W 6.8ohm resistor and connect it across the the two wires going to the indicator. No harm if left alone.

There we go. I thought it was you who said that, but I wasn't sure and didn't want to falsely give you credit  ;)

I'm not exactly sure what that means (connect it across the the two wires going to the indicator), but I may just leave it alone. Unless you wanna explain briefly...

I never installed the resistors when I did the integrator on my TLR. The way I understand it is that the resistor acts like another bulb so it is installed between the two wires that would go to the turn signals. Now I am not sure if it need to be installed before or after the integrator box. Sorry but I am more mechanical than electrical.

No sweat, you have been so much help already. Did you read the first post in this thread? Am I correct about not using the tail wire? And about the other hookups?

The tail light would be your running light, low filament. I believe it is the brown wire from the brake bulbs. But since it is not affected with the turn/brake light function, it does not need to be connected.
Everything else looks right.

Ah, the running light, good catch. OK, it's also brown on the integrator, so that'll be easy. OK, can't wait to get off...shaZam!, 6 hours still. Damn  :x

OK, it's done, and I couldn't be happier. I have 24 pictures, and a step-by-step rundown of what to do. I didn't write as I went (what am I, a stenographer???) but I think I still have it in my hungover head. I will create a new thread that will give a how-to on it. Then, people can make it a FAQ if wanted, or do whatever. Here's a pic to tease you...

Does anyone object to me starting a new thread for it? And there will be 27 total pics (24 new, 3 old)...cool???  :dunno: John? Mods?

This is with no brakes on, right turn signal on.

Glad you got it all worked out  :thumb:

Starting a new thread may be a good idea as well as adding this to the FAQ forum.

By all means, write it up as a seperate thread. Do a thorough job, post it, then let the mods decide if they want to move it to the How-To section. If you don't write it that way, it will be a mish-mash hackjob that no one can make sense of. Also, posting it here for group feedback (checking for any factual errors, clarifying schematics, etc.) will give everyone a chance to see it and make comments, so you'll know if there are any sections that need improvement or changes BEFORE it becomes an actual How-To.

IOW, just do it; you don't need permission from anyone to write or post it. Worst case is that it won't become a How-To, but a lot of people will benefit from it anyway. Seems like win/win to me...

Cool. I'll work on it through the day and have it up around 4. That picture is blurry, but it looks pretty good, agreed?

I need to Dremel the rest of the fender and possibly fabricate a new license plate bracket. then it'll look really clean.

Just an update: I've gone through all the pictures and circled the important parts in each. I think it's pretty clear. I'll hopefully have it up before I leave tonight. Should be a good one!

Take your time; you seem to do good work with hardware, now let's see how well you document it. If you rush and mangle it, you'll have only yourself to blame. BUT HURRY UP I WANT TO SEE IT!

I did that to my bike, but forgot the pics.. It's easy to do if you take your time, and looks a lot better in my mind than stock.
It' easier seen at night for sure though, in the day it can look like your back brake light is flashing.

OK, it's done. shaZam!, that took forever. I hope everyone finds it both helpful and enjoyable. I know I hate reading textbook-style writeups, so I wrote in the style I usually use: to the point but also doses of humor to keep it from making you fall asleep.

Let me know if I can change or add anything. It's like a report: you did it, so you know what it SHOULD say, however you may not notice omissions because the idea's already in your noodle. Someone else, however, will notice because they don't know what it should say.
