Close call(s)!

Funny how when you start F'ing up on a bike how it can escalate.

So I was riding down an industrial road earlier, going about 70km/h or so, when a stale green off in the distance goes yellow, and there's some cars in the intersection waiting on lefts.

I decided to brake, and I guess I went to hard on the rear, cause I felt it locked and skidding along the ground.  At this point I'm going pretty fast so I start to feel like I'm going "diagonally" so I figure I'll just ride it out until the end (otherwise get highsided if I suddenly release it as I've heard).

Anyway I manage to make it to a stop before the line, a little shaken at the messy uncontrolled "diagonal stop" I just made.    I'm looking back at the long strip of rubber I've left behind me, glad I was able to make it OK, and notice this truck decelerating in the distance behind me to come to stop at the intersection.  The light's short, so it goes green again pretty quickly.

The truck hasn't totally stopped yet, he assumes I'll get going before he has to stop.  As I start to take off, I totally forgot I was in a high gear, I never downshifted (like 4th or 5th).  So what happened is although my bike started to roll forward the truck driver assumed that I was going to go normally, but then the rear wheel locked again cause of the stall and I came to this sudden halt.

SCREEEEEECH!  :o  I guess he had to use all the brakes he had cause he stopped literally like 2-3 feet behind my bike.  It was intense, I was half a second away from jumping off the bike.  All the traffic in the intersection just halts and they're all looking my way.

Get her going again, click her all the way down into 1st, and get moving.  After that I thought "F this for today, I'm going to have a beer" and drove back home, calmly as possible.

So here I am

Let's hear some of your closest calls guys (and gals), the ones that start bad and get worse!

Yikes, 2 in a row.  Glad nothing bad happened.

Worst close call I've had so far:

Driving down the freeway.  Early Morning. 20 minutes into a 80 minute trip.  Decided to change lanes.  Looked in my mirror and casually moved over to my right.

Next thing I know I look to my right and there is a car in the lane I'd just moved into. Before i jump back to my lane I see the driver's eyes as big as saucers - i think i scared him more than he scared me.

I shudder to think what would have happened if i had cut harder into that lane.  80mph GS vs. Car crash?  Hmm... I wonder who would win...

Lesson: Look over your shoulder.

I am a newb, but I have had a few.

I was riding my wife on my gs500f. I was coming up on a semi-blind intersection so I slowed down a bit. As I approached an ambulance pulls to the light, red on his end, slows and starts in. I brake. The end swings out from some fresh oil on the road, and the extra weight in the tail.

Lucky for me years of Miata tossing taught a motorcycle newb to keep cool. I grabbed a little more front brake, stayed steady on the rear, and countersteered. I got it to halt diagonal in the lane just as the big white and orange passed through.

AUGH!  I almost had to change my shorts just thinking it...

Very nice. I'm thankful I haven't had any close calls yet. I did smack 2 mirrors on different cars in a row one time when I was lane splitting, but that was at very slow speeds. About as close at it's gotten for me.

Way too numerous to count.  Most weren't my fault, just idiot cagers not paying attention, or just being A-HOLES! :x

Just the other day I was on my way to school, I'm looking ahead like always, this bastard in a red Sunfire is riding my tail.  Up ahead, like 100-200 ft. is a RED light with at least 3 cars already stopped.  Which means it had been red for a while.  The lanes are kinda wide on this road, and I'm on the left portion of my lane.  Well Mr. Jackass Sunfire pulls up on my right about his front tire to my back tire and HONKS HIS F_ING HORN!!! :x  :guns:  :x   Like I should be going faster, when cars are stopped ahead of me.  I was going about 30mph by the way in a 35, with a STOP light not far ahead of me.  Well guess what, we both stopped at the light, and he wanted me to go faster, so I could STOP?  What a jackass! :guns:   Anyway when the light turned he turned right, and I kept going straight.  The close call part of this is when he ran WAY up and got along side of me.  I didn't say before, but this is a two lane road, one coming and one going.  He was with in a foot or two of me in the same friggin lane.
Mr. Jackass red Sunfire, if you read this I hope you die of the clap.

I had similar experience once. I was on my 89 Yamaha Route 66 cruiser. I was leaving college for the day and drove by one of the local burger joints. I was being ignorant and driving a little too fast showing off for some hotties when the car infront of me slmmed on her brakes cause she wasn't paying attention either. I bury the rear and , open the clutch and tighten the fronts. The back end gets totally sideways, I left off just for a second and the bike pops up (it was laying over pretty good) and I bury the rear again, to keep from spilling it. I end up sidewyas in the street about 6 inches from the rear bumper. no helmet that day either (I used to be dumb and stupid)

That alone takes some serious talent....  Is it pretty hard to ride looking around or over her head? ;)

Sorry, I just had to ask.

close call for me, worst and only close call ive had.

When I was still riding my 500f in ybor city on the backroads, i was doing probably around 45-60 mph i can't remember. Anyway, there was a hidden stop sign and by the time i saw it there was no way i could brake to a halt before the intersection, so i decided to accelerate harder, keep in mind i had no time to debate stop or go so i just hammered it through, as i was going through a ford f350 was passing through also and i saw him comming at me out of the corner of my eye, the ford truck driver BARELY missed making me a bug on his front grill as I passed through, I wanted to throw up after I made it safely through and almost considered quiting street riding.

:(

I didn't want to be the first to point it out. I am soooooo glad you did!

Didn't I see that in a biker flick once?

Narcissus

I haven't really had a close call yet, worst thing thats happened to me so far was I downshifted and released the clutch too fast, so the rear wheel locked up for a half second, enough to make a little *screech*. I saw a guy on a goldwing get cut-off a few weeks ago though, he honked his horn, jumped into the other lane and drove up beside the front window then honked vigourously and flipped them the bird.

lmao, thanks for the laugh.

I think my closest call came when I was going down the large hill by my house at a rather fair clip. It has a sharp drop before a quick leveling out, followed by a 90 degree turn to the right. I braked hard at the middle of the steep grade, followed by successive downshifts. I was shifting too fast, apparently, as my rear wheel did a couple hops as I was coming ever nearer my turn-in point. Rear wheel hop is SCARY. Makes me wish I had a slipper clutch.

I had a close call once upon a time, I ended up on my side sliding down the road, since then Ive had way too many close calls, I think I have moments just about every time I go out and ride.

EDub

My close call was when i was riding back to NIU for the fall semester, which is all basically one lane road.  The two cars in front of me were going very slow, like 10 under slow.  So, i decide to pass them.  I drop to 4th from 6th and crank it.  Well the suv in front of me decided to pass too, forcing me completely off the road and onto the left side GRAVEL shoulder.  Not giving him the full blame for not checking his blind spot though, cuz i shouldnt have been trying to pass more than one car at a time.

I've been not paying attention to traffic directly ahead of me for a split second, and then looked back to realize we've stopped. Once I had to border right on the edge of locking both brakes to still come to a stop 2 feet off of a car. The front was locking for a tiny bit, then rolling again as I was slowing.

Good chance to practice panic braking I guess.
