Wait till you have it hoisted up on the bike lift and drop it off that into a pile stuff that's laying on your garage floor. That really sucks. And I must have some kind of sasquatch strength or something cuz i"ve never had much of a problem lifting my bike up. If someone who gives a damn about searching cares to look, I'm sure there's a post floating around about the technique used to pick up your bike.

you use your center stand to fill up?

when on my ZX6R I just get as close to the pump as i can pop the gas tank open and stand up balancing the bike inbetween my legs till its full

then close off the cap and rocket outa there!

Longinus

At work I once witnessed a bloke set his thigh/crotch on fire while he was filling his bike with fuel. He had remained seated on the bike while pumping then after hanging up the hose he stood the bike upright between his legs and started leaning it from side to side, i presume this was to stir the fuel. Anyhoo, the friction between his pants and the seat must have built up a static charge and as he touched his hand to a metal surface a spark must have occured igniting the fumes in the above mentioned areas. The fire only burned for about six or seven seconds, damned funny stuff.

Wow I went though a whole day of work with gas on my leg. I had no idea I could have ignited myself just by walking around! Thanks for the info...I feel dumb!

I just use the side stand and get off. It never crossed my mind that the tank might not be getting completely full because the bike was on the side stand. I'd rather not get it completely full than get gas on my pants or take a chance on dropping it off the center stand.

Quote from: Jake DHow does having a light bike equal danger?

What does the weight of a bike have to do with safety?

Why does a heavy bike make someone feel safe?
I think it's partly a power to weight thing. A Harley Softail Standard is 651 lbs, and only makes something like 65 hp*. That's a little less that 0.10 hp per pound. The GS500f weighs only 396 lbs, and makes 47 hp. That's almost 0.12, %20 more that the harley. And the power/weight difference is going to be a lot bigger on a "real" sporstbike.

And heavy things in general just seem safe to most people. Light things seems fickle and crushable.

I was thinking about this yesterday as I was getting blown around like a leaf in 50mph gusts. Spent a lot of time leaned over to go straight and wondered if heavier bikes would get blown around less. :dunno:

In a Car (Truck, SUV, Etc.) impact, weight can make a huge difference.

Some physics major can post the actual equation, but it's something like speed / mass * blah * blah

Mass makes quite a difference... An 8,114 LBS Hummer vs a 2,593 lbs Civic would NOT be pretty... For the Civic.

As far as motos go.... You get tossed either way, so why would you want a 1,200 lbs moto landing on your leg? :dunno:

Do you mean:

1/2 * mass * (speed * speed)

It's the V-squared that really ruins your day....but you're right, the smaller mass generally loses.

I knew it was something like that, but the gravitational influence between two bodies calculation was sticking in my head.

Mass * Mass / Distance (or something)...

Bah... It was years ago and I passed the class... :dunno: Isn't that what matters. :P

Gravity isn't a force...

What?

God damn v^2.

isn't that mass^2/distance^2? I know the force is inversely proportional to the square of the distance between em...

My attitude is in serious need of readjustment, and I'm ok with that.

Math is hard... Formulas are hard to remember...

Aren't you glad I didn't try to be an engineer?

Roadstergal

In Newtonian physics, momentum is mass * velocity. Momentum is conserved in an elastic collision.

Energy of a moving object is 1/2 (m(v^2)). That's where bullets get their nastiness. They don't weigh much, but they're moving fast.

And I think you're getting this mixed up with gravity; it's an inverse square law force, so the force drops rapidly with distance.
