Thanks for everyone's help.

My Name Is Dave

Too much current passing through it?  :dunno:

Funny PDX

Honestly, you could have a short to ground somewhere coming from the battery. If the fuse is blowing this means that the short is probibly somewhere in front of the mian fuse. Trace all the wires that go to that fuse, and see if there is anything obvious like a chaffed wire, or a loose wire.

Ahhhh! I thought I smelled electrical distress somewhere...

Seriously though, were you doing anything to the GS we need to know about prior to the fuse blowing? You may need to buy a box of the 20A fuses before you find the problem.

When does the fuse blow? Does it blow while starting or running?

Do you know how to use a VOM (Volt-Ohm meter)?

If you know how to use one and have one (or access to one). That will help.

Let us know.

Yeah....have you dropped the bike on the left side, or have you layed it down on the left side.....cuz if you have you may have what is called here "GOATS" syndrome after the aptley(sp?) named Goat.

What you need to do to check this is best found using the search feature....but it involves using a multimeter to check the stator(like the altenator) which is inside the left case cover, or you can remove the left case cover and take a look. THe magnets attached to the rotor spin around the windings of the stator, and when you crash for some reason those magnets break loose and start to fall into the crankcase and do all kinds of damage.

That is the exact symptom of the se7enty7/Cheesy/TarzanBoy-goat syndrome, OK that bike went to 3 people in succession on this site ... currently in TB's hands ... There are various versions of goats of course. Srinath/Goat syndrome is when it gets goats for no reason all of a sudden - as is the regular goats ... OK fine age and mileage are srinath/goats and not for plain old goats ... and then of course there is the dreaded Starwalt's disease ... OK I'll let him explain it ... But its is so devastating ... Lemme put it this way ... the dreaded goats syndrome is just a annoying side effect of starwalts ...
Confused yet ... OK ...
You got a rotor magnet that is disintegrating ... making contact with the stator and shredding them ... it gets in your oil and you're prolly have to rebuild ... of the 4 that got goats, only goat rebuilt it ... I opened it took the thing off, spalled a new magnet on it, put new coil in and rode it again, oil changes every 100 miles for 500 miles and yea open up the pan and clean the oil pick up screen ... 4K miles later still kicking ... I sold it ... TB/Cheesy/se7enty7 - same thing. Starwalt ... no idea ... its not back together yet ...

Close... just drop the extra 'e.'

All too true.    Though I am taking the long road to getting on the road, you should see my shiny red calipers and those snazzy stainless Galfer lines.

For the amount of time it is taking, I should have gone ahead and pulled the engine and had the frame powder coated. Right now the swing arm is in its second coat of primer and I am finishing some front end work.

I'd bet your fuse blows sometime while riding, it is just that you can't really check it until  you stop.  Exactly what do you mean by "shut the bike off"?

Does it die when you hit the Engine Stop switch (before turning the key OFF)?

Currenty there is a GS bottom end on ebay with the rotor on the crankshaft. Look closely and you see only one magnet in the rotor. "Goats" to be sure.

"Starwalt's" results in my avatar. That is a centrifugally destroyed starter motor, a result of a seized starter gear getting a death grip on the starter clutch while a bike is running about 40 mph.  :o  Search my first post thread for the whole messy story. Hey it was only $416 for the bike on eBay!

Now I am just being anal with the rebuild. Not totally anal. Anal enough though.

Question for Roadstergal. Am I a sick puppy for stripping my wiring harness down to the wires and rewrapping it with new black tape?
