GS reverse shift (GP style)

The rest of my bikes are reverse shift style (1 is up, everything down), I prefer this style alot more, since I seem to miss upshifts less this way. I was wondering if anyone knew how to make the GS into this style? It would definetely make things less confusing, and would match my preference. Thanks for any help

make or purchase some rearsets and setup linkages, then you can have the pattern any direction you wish.
Accelerate like your being chased, Corner like you mean it, Brake as if you life depends on it.
Ride Hard...or go home.

Its you Vs the pavement.....who wins today?

GP shift is the way to go.
You will need to convert it to a linkage shifter. This a pic from my old race bike with Woodcraft rearsets. I had to change the footpeg to one that doubles as the pivot point for the shifter pedal. I do not recall the length of the rod but it is was the same length as my TLR. The splined part is common from any GSXR/SV/TL.

Common sense in not very common.

dgyver - I hope you replaced that front sprocket shortly after taking the pic?  :o

Cool, good idea,

Any way to get cheap rearsets? Any other suzuki products that have matching bolt patterns, like the SV or GSXR, that I could just bolt on and use a linkage, that anyone knows of?

about the closest ones are the cbr ones on Pablo's website.

CBR900RR rearsets on GS. Just require drilling the mount holes out about 1/8" Splined end is a stock GS shifter cut off.

It is fine, just looks worn. The flash only shows the clean parts.

GSXR600 is close, I have one but do not recall the year. It was written on the back but has been wiped off. It is pre 01.

You could always weld up the frame in that area and drill new holes to match whatever rearset you want to use.

One problem with the CBR rearsets is that the Honda spline does not fit on the GS shaft. And the Suzuki threaded part on the splined knuckle does not fit the Honda shift rod. So you need both parts and cut/weld them together.

Making rearsets is not too hard to do. I have been working on a simple design. Just using a band saw, a drill press with a hole saw and a sander.

dgyver is right about the honda splines and threads not matching Suzuki. I can't weld (yet!), but I came up with a simple solution. I got a spare GS shift arm on ebay for about 5 bucks, cut it off, and drilled a hole to attach the shift rod heim joint. Then I got a heim joint at a local industrial fastener supply shop and connected the shift rod to the shifter arm. You'll probably have to special order the reverse thread heim. If you're impatient like me though you can get the next size up standard thread and tap the shift link. Aluminum is super easy to tap...just make sure it's straight and make sure it's clean before you run the tap in - aluminum is also super easy to gall.

Also, my rearsets are Honda, but the shift link and pedal is Yamaha R1. Since peg diameters on modern sportbikes are for the most part a standard size, just about any shift pedal will work, so you may be able to skirt the whole spline issue by using a Suzuki pedal and link setup on a Honda rearset. I just used the R1 stuff because it was in my box of spare crap.

if you use a shift drum out of a gs 450 you get gp shift without changing rearsets(but you do have to split engine cases to change it)
