has anybody thought about working on an efi kit our poor little 500?
The final measure of any rider's skill is the inverse ratio of his preferred Traveling Speed to the number of bad scars on his body. It is that simple: If you ride fast and crash, you are a bad rider. And if you are a bad rider, you should not ride motorcycles.

Funny you should mention that. I was trolling the net this week for such an idea. Autronics (from the land of Oz) has a controller that will do 2 to 8 cylinders. Bend over...$$$$$ :o You can spend A LOT if you buy all the stuff from one of their distributors. It is really a "performance" product targeted to racing.

I also found a group doing an open source controller for their Vettes.

Carbs can be/are a pain and the idea of EFI is attractive from that perspective. It may be cheaper to find a bike EFI system and adapt it to the GS.

Maybe after I finish my rebuild.  :dunno:

I guess if we fuel injected without a epa to tell us what to do we may get better performance ... else carbs are better - atleast what I have heard.
Cool.

look up megasquirt - it could do it cheap.

FI is inherently cleaner than carburation...  you typically get more power with lower emissions with FI in the car world, and I can't imagine it's any different in the bike world.  Better fuel vaporization, better adaptation of mix to conditions.

I would love injenction on my GS, with my experience on my two Trans Ams the fuel injection is much better and made a load more horsepower and still got 22 mpg with a big cam , exhaust , and a chip.

Dana (used to be on this board) has a megasquirt running on his GS500 (or was it a 450?) land racer.

I poured over the Megasquirt site(s) and am convinced that it would make a good project. Deciding on the throttle bodies, fuel pump, regulator, etc. would be easier if someone, like Dana, had gone through the experience and could relate what not to try.

After the 90 rebuild, I may look into this for the Athens engine. I could build the MSquirt controller no sweat and probably code it also. I am familiar with the Motorola CPU family it uses. I now recall the original Circuit Cellar article for the MSquirt 1.0.

I need more research material and have started adding FI books to my Amazon wishlist.  I also have a couple of buddies that work at Bosch here in Anderson. Hmmm? Engineering samples you say??

I know that Dana used a throttle body from a 500cc snowmobile and he had some difficulty dialing in the fuel map.  IIRC he ran a 12 second quarter mile with dry lakes gearing and it wasn't yet dialed in.  That was the last I heard from him.

Hi folks (sorry to hog space, but there's a lot here),

Just got the PM from Shane. Yes, I've been off for a while remodeling my home, so there's been no time or money, but I'm back on the task.

Visit my racing site to see all the specifics:
http://www.bndracing.com/ ... I took down the site's pics to save space. I need to redo, but will put some back if anyone asks.

Go here:
http://www.bndracing.com/specs-03.htm
to see all the bike specs including the EFI stuff.

Here are more details:
The throttle bodies are from a 1994 Polaris Indy Classic EFI Snowmobile off eBay $35  8)  I had to make an adapter to accomodate the inlet port angles (details available to those who need them). It came with the TPS, fuel pressure reg., fuel rail and linkages intact. Everything fit 95%.

The EFI is Megasquirt which took a HELL OF A LOT of dialing in  :o  I would have been up the creek had I not been bailed out by a great guy in VA (see the site credits). The MS forum is probably more help now though. You really need a dyno and a laptop to properly dial it in.

LOTS OF WORK!!!!! ... specially making the harness. Even now, I'm working out bugs. Frinstance, the fuel pump I used killed the bike halfway down a 1/4 mile drag test. Too much current draw on the poor old GS battery and charging system when the RPM's go up and the injectors start cranking away, and the fuel pump is going non-stop. The Megasquirt calls for a switched fuel pump, but I said what the heck and by-passed adding another relay circuit and just had it always on for my dinky LS passes.

Lots of sensors needed to be added: cylinder temp, air temp, MAP (manifold air pressure), O2 bung needed to be welded to the exhaust, uh, lessee ... fuel pump with switch, a boat-load of fuses called for a new fuse panel (7-10) and a long ground strip with two separate large gauge taps to the frame. Did I mention a bigger battery? I'm going to try a Gold Wing battery next. Injectors are a bit large for a non turbo application, so count on down-sizing. MAP tap was off the inlet port but needed a vacuum accumulator to buffer out the vac surges (details available). Lots more ... Probably about $250-$1000 to outfit depending on how you score.

Anyway PM me or I can post more if anybody needs to know.

I'm very happy that's there's an interest. This application is very do-able. Now I'm adding the turbo ... Muhahaha (as James would say)

Again, sorry to hog space.

my origional idea was to rip parts off of some other wrecked suzuki with EFI and then get somthing like the megasquirt to control it.

i'm not sure how long i'm going to keep my bike layed up, but depending on that and how much  extra $ i find laying around i'm thinking about giving it a shot, if for no other reason than that i'm not a fan of carbs and fooling with jetting.

BTW ... the pic on my site clearly shows the MS EFI box. The DB-35 connector goes to the wiring harness. At the other end (barely visible) is a DB-9 for a serial port ... huh? what are those? Yes, I had to snag a cheap laptop with a serial port to run the software. The USB to serial doesn't work well.

You can also see the throttle bodies pretty nicely. A bracket hanging down from the old seat bracket holds the assy. up.

Black switch onthe left hand grip is the fuel pump (required for shutoff). BTW, the fuel pump is inside the tank. New rules mean I need to put a new one external. There are stainless fuel lines running down the opposite side. They come out the tank/seat, go down through the seat pan, then forward.

just saw your site dana, that is awesome. i think i'll give it a shot, is there any particular reason you went with the throttle body you did?

To be sure the Msquirt box is large. The 37 pin connector is standard on a lot of medical imaging gear, particularly 3M interfaces. We can thank Microsoft and the USB Conspiracy for the loss of most DB9 connectors. Yeah it's an old (ancient) interface, but at least it was mostly public domain. Hell, now even USB is a mixed bag of stuff.

Thanks Dana for the details for the fuel delivery parts. $1k+ is still pricey for a one off application for the street. Like the Turbo GS, ya gotta want to do it, but finding another home for it after it is done is tougher. You have an interesting GS variation there.  8)

Hello. I am working at an EFI kit for my GS. You can find more info on my blog www.suzukiGS500efi.blogspot.com .

Gizmoman

Hi everyone. We have begun the build (rebuild) of the GS500 EFI based on the Blog and documentation, created by Cristian Vasile. With his permission we are rebuilding the prototype he made and redesigning the whole thing from scratch to make it compact (with SMD components), waterproof and generally give it the spick and shine it needs. Most importantly we are doing all that with the final price in mind and are putting together a complete kit for anyone to convert his/hers bike with Throttle bodies, sensors and all the other stuff needed to make the entire conversion.

If anyone is interested then feel free to read about the project here.

The Buddha

Final price ? - you do know that if it is more than a 100 bucks you can kiss any gstwin sales goodbye right ...
This is the logic we follow here -
We buy a bike, missing several pieces for 100 bucks, Say a guage cluster, tank and carbs and few others.
Then we see someone selling a tank for say 150.
We tell them ... I biught a whole bike for 100, I aint paying 150 for a tank ...
Carbs - Repeat ...
Guages - Repeat

Heck you could buy a GS with several more missing pieces and a dead motor free ... then extend the same logic ...
Hey dont get mad @ me - I'm the victim here. We fail to consider stuff is so cheap in some cases due to the missing/dead parts.

Cool.

Like he said, price would be the one that makes or breaks sales for GS500 accessories and parts. Most folks ride these because it is cheap to own and maintain.

That being said, I am  very much interested in this project and really looking forward to the end result.  :thumb:

Pelikan

I'd buy a fuel injection kit for the GS.  Worth it just to avoid the choke.  What's the ballpark?
Good day to you!

Gizmoman

Tnx for the reply guys. The price is unknown for now as we are still working on the schematics but i cannot promise it will be cheaper than 100 USD. (only the Throttle body costs no less than 50 USD on E-bay so for the complete kit, although it will be affordable, the price is unknown yet).

Don't forget. This ain't a broken part or a replacement for the bike, it's a complete kit to make your bike EFI :) The main reason we started the project is cause one of our team members has the bike so no-one actually asked us to do it except for us.

If you are interested then make sure to join the Group and receive any updates.
