jetting a Canadian bike

From my search of past posts, there seems to be differences between how American and Canadian GS500s are jetted, due to emmissions regulations- I am right in saying that?.

Will a factory pro jet kit improve the performance of a stock Canadian GS500?

I know my bike is (maybe TOO) lean. Its getting colder here and when I start it up these days its more prone to backfiring. Before she's totally warmed up, I'm riding with the choke on there seems to be more power available.

A properly tuned lean motor should run with more power, but hotter than a rich one- shouldn't it? Maybe my bike IS too lean?

I'm envisioning some sort of optimum jetting bell curve graph, on the x axis the mixture ratio and the y axis the power. I have a feeling I'm on the left side of the curve, below optimum power delivery.

If I install a jet kit will the carbs be delivering THE BEST fuel/air mixture to the engine? How will the cold weather affect the bike after rejet?

Does a jet kit do more than feed more fuel to the engine?

I had my needles shimmed rather than springing the cash for a jet kit.
If you directions on how to do this, I can provide that. Just PM/email me.

The bike now runs a lot better in hot and cold weather, and the morning startup ritual doesn't take nearly as long.

BTW, with the colder temps we are getting, you might have to screw around with the idle adjuster located between your carbs to get the rpm to be 1200 when fully warmed up.

my bike runs just fine in the cold weather, although I havn't really had it long enough to notice if there was a difference I guess. start up is a bit<h but I found I trick that for some reason works really well

-turn the ignition on
-put the choke on most of the way
-leave the fule in the regular "on" position
-pull in the clutch
-now with you other hand pull in the brake leaver really hard and roll on the throttle with your palm while pushing the start button, (yes all this with one hand)

for some reason that works perfectly for me, I never bother to use the "prime" fule position and it starts just fine every time...

:( dam it, why did I say that, now the bastard won't start in the morning :x

Instead of buying a jet ket you can just buy the jets from here and save alot of money

Even if the voices aren't real they have some good ideas.

That is REALLY hard on the bike...you want to keep a light load on the engine until it's near operating temperature.

Blue05twin - which needles are the appropriate ones for the GS?
Did you change the main jets as well?
