Yeah, just did.  Within an hour of here barring traffic,  there are some fun roads in Nassau and Suffolk counties off Northern Blvd. like to the Planting Fields in Oyster Bay. Also heading upstate to Bear Mountain, Harriman State Park and the Seven Lakes area are some great runs.

Didn't you get the memo?  Anything not in NYC is "upstate".  I have relatives that live in Fulton, and they laugh when anyone south of I-90 claims to live "upstate".  I used to live in Rochester...my definition of upstate is:  anywhere in New York where you can expect 2 feet of snow on any given day.

Before i lived where I do now, I lived in St. Regis, Massena, Malone and Fort Covington.  That's upstate.

You're right about the mentality.  Anything outside of the city is considered upstate... though some of the folks in the near suburbs just north of town get upset when you say this to them.

Its more a case of if-I-haven't-heard-of-it-and-its-not-in-the-city-limits then its just easier for New York (City) 'ers to classify it as upstate.  Regardless of actual geography.

Not sure if Westchester is included in 'Upstate' since it is NYC Metro area... But anything other than NYC, Westchester, and LI is in Upstate NY.

AKA where all the downstaters' taxes go  :mrgreen:

I've resided in my fair share of Upstate locales: Albany, Saratoga, near Cobleskill (BFE Scholhaire!), and Rochester.  Life's just different...

I see NYC as a "ball and chain" strapped to upstate's leg..haha. A lot of NYC statistics are included in the rest of NY such as crime rates, taxes, gas prices, whatever. Upstate pays more for everything because we have parasitic NYC attached to us.  :lol:

Downstate provides tax money and in return, receives less aid.  Upstate benefits from the wealth the NYC metro area produces... As for high taxes, thank your politicians with their pet spending projects and how poorly the state gov't is run

Oh, true true... Though Brooklyn is starting to become productive, and can't forget the tax income from the suburbs.  Nowadays a great deal of people are employed in the suburbs, rather than having to commute into the city.  And the state gives squat to the suburbs (see chart)

Upstate is on welfare cause the politics suck. You get up into Franklin County and what not and there are a TON of farms. Farmers have no money. Reservations have no money. Desolate areas have no money. People are stuck without education and crappy schools so they can't get out. Politicians don't really give a shaZam! because downstate is more important to them. I'm alive because of Medicade and welfare...just because the city doesn't get as much aid doesn't mean they aren't hurting the rest of the state with statistics...

Just got back from a trip to visit my son, who lives in Ithaca and attends Ithaca College.I found the area very beautiful.Its in the finger lakes region.Lots of great state parks nearby.Stayed in a bed and breakfast just outside town.Ithaca is a way cool town too.I'm flat happy for my son, as he loves both the college and the town, and it does me good to see him happy.I had never been near that far east before.I love the Pacific Northwest, but, I tell you, I could see myself retiring in Ithaca, NY.I know it gets cold ther, but I spent a winter in Great Falls, Mt, where 30 below is common.

Yeah, Ithaca is very nice. There are a lot of waterfalls and gorges in the area, which next time you are out this way, you should check them out. I am about 60 miles from Ithaca.

And as far as winter, keep in mind there is a lot of "Lake Effect" snow. That translates into "A lot of damn snow"  :lol:

Anyone been in Wappingers Falls, NY?   My home from age 2-8.  Apparently its outside poughkeepsie - is that upstate?

I always refer to it as upstate NY, because if I don't, people's first reaction is 'New York City? OMG, what was it like, I really want to move there'

read: 'I watch too much TV and think everyone's life parallels sex and the city.' Ok, so its the ladies that always respond that way, but you get the idea.
