Hey,
Does anyone know if Kerrys valve adjustment video is being hosted online? I had heard some talk about it but dont know if it happened, this is assuming someone has done so w/ Kerrys permission.  :thumb:  My bike is running crappy and I think it is time for one. Anyone know some symptoms of a bike that is in need of such?

i need to do the valves too, but I need guidance

some guy at work (gold wing rider for many years) said to me: "you better take the bike to the stealership. the valves is something you don't want to do, because it requires expertise, and blah blah blah..."

now I am confused.  :bs:
Caturday yet?

Buy the Clymer manual, follow the instructions.  Report back if you have problems.   It REALLY IS that simple!  You'll see...  :thumb:
Every zero you add to the tolerance adds a zero to the price.

If the product "fails" will the product liability insurance pay for the "failure" until it turns 18?

Nah, you don't need a manual. Just start taking things apart till you get to where you see the cams. Then use your head, and pull the shims out that need it. I used 2 thin flat head screwdrivers and needle nose pliers after taking off the holds on the cam shafts and rotating them so there was the greatest clearence. Use one screwdriver to push down on the valve, the other to pop the shim out, and pliers to grab it.  Easy as pie. Well, maybe baking/making a pie, and then haveing to eat the whole thing. (or not eat any of it.. hmm I digress)

Seriously, If you take it slow and carful, you should be fine. Unless you have a nack for messing things like this up. Oh, and beware the huge hole that the chain rotates in.. its like a big black hole. Don't loose anything down that. I almost did. I donno how much work that would have created, but it would have been a large pain, I think.

Oh, here this might help, unless you have already seen it..
http://gstwin.com/adjust_valves.htm

That helped me. You don't have to do everything in the guide. (like pulling the carbs/airbox) I have a theroy that might help someone (and me next time), I think if you took out the cam tensioner, then the chain would go slack, and you could just pick up the cams off the valve and pull out the shim. Does anyone know if this would work? If not, I'm going to try it next time, and I'll try to tell this place how it works out. (don't wait for me though, I just did my check/exchange 20 miles ago)

Someone posted a torrent to download the video, I had it seeded for a little bit but there isn't too much demand for it. I have a copy that I can aim to you if you want it.If that dosen't work I can always post it on my site, but at 500MB its going to rip through my bandwidth. Let me know if you want it.

calamari

I've PM you jardisan, and yes... im interested  :P

i belive kerry went through alot of trouble to film a valve adjustment, edit it, and put it on CD along with a valve adjustment Kit and tools and THEN donated it to the whole GS comunity.   i belive he also said anyone wanting a copy could send him (think it was) 5$ or so to cover the cost of the CD,case, and shipping.  never once did i read anywhere about him allowing DL's of his movie.  i belive it would be best to ASK him before DLing or streaming a copy of his work.   i have one of his early works on CD and i can tell it was alot of work for him.   i would like to see proper respect shown for it and make sure we dont step on his toes.  Agreed?

I think he would be ok with it based on this thread...

Rema1000 is also hosting a torrent, or at least was. I got that info from Kerry himself. I'm sure if the video is not altered and credit is given its all good...

Why not instead of assuming its ok just because he DIDNT Give an answer in that thread, to PM, or even Email him if its ok to share it or copy it for others, then there is no Guess work involved.

No offense... but the video was clearly made by kerry for the benefit of the readers here on this board.

From the posts I've read regarding it, he only ever charged shipping plus the costs of the tape/cd/whatever.

I made a post asking about the video and valve/shim kit a few weeks ago and got a bunch of replies... none of which where helpful in finding a copy (on or offline) of the video.   What good does the video do any new users to the board if the older users keep hoarding it to themselves?

There are ways to distribute the video without hosing your bandwith... and there are ways to shrink the 500mb size down.   A 30 minute long, 400 x 300 video will only take up ~50MB of space if encoded with DivX or Xvid.  That is small enough to be sent in five 10MB-sized-chunks from a free gmail/yahoo account.

I've offered to put the video on DVD... but I can't even do that until someone makes it available.

calamari

yep, we should aske Kerry about this.

i got a copy now (WMV), but it's corrupted 27 minutes into the video  :x  but it comes back on minute 46, so there's a big chunk missing that I haven't seen

I'll try to fix it now and pm kerry about sharing the vid with those who might need it.

I would like to have this video very much, but i live in europe so the internet transfer would be the only way.

If gstwin would manage to put the video somewere this site would kickass totaly :)).

Also another question: where do you buy the shims to valves? At local dealership or some hardware shop. And how much do they cost?

ok when i first read this it really pissed me off and i started 3 differant lines inwhich to tell you how to....  never mind as i thought better of it and there might be a misunderstanding to how i processed it.

No, those of us who DO have a copy are NOT hording it because we can,  ive done valve adjustments on bikes long before i had a GS, as well as cars, trucks, boats and 1 lycoming (aircraft)

Kerry selected a few of us to check out his work and "Critic" it as it were to help gauge how he did, fine points, questions etc.   I have NO problem sharing,  BUT untill i get in writeing, via Thread Post,Email,PM or Skywriting im NOT going to reproduce or redistribute his hard work.  I would think and still do that The members on this site have that same respect for Kerry.

You want a text step by step, the book has it. You dont have a Book? then you really should get one.   This is not the same as RTFM.   if even just for SPECS its good to have.    there have been a few threads in which the basic process of valve adjustments have been discribed or explained when someone didnt understand something.

QuoteI've offered to put the video on DVD... but I can't even do that until someone makes it available.

Only ONE person can give that permission and it isnt anyone holding a copy of it.  By all means, offer your help to him, he may take you up on the offer.

Nah, no where near nasty, thats why i changed my tune and tried to clearup any missunderstanding.  IF Kerry ok's it and his kit with the Video is out of reach, I and the others whom have a copy (im pretty sure) will be willing to make a copy and send em out (Like kerry for cost of matirials/shipping, no profit)

OK, Iam in the same boat as Wantabe... It'll be nice to have the video, although I can do without if it is not available...
But, Does anyone know where Kerry is?  Anything wrong with him?

Maybe someone could get rid of all those IFs... :dunno:
