What will 10 minutes and the use of 3 diff size wrenches (Ratchet with 7mm & 10mm sockets, 19mm box wrench) get you?

QuoteThe Vance & Hines Ignition Advancer is one of the best and cheapest performance mods you can make to the GS500 as it is easy to install and makes a noticeable difference in performance. The average price is around $45. What this part does is help the GS500 make more power at low rpm that translates to less stalls starting off and more useable power at cruising rpm. You feel the bike accelerate harder from a stop and notice no power drop at higher rpm.

Some people argue that this part makes the GS500 lose power at top rpm (maybe 1 or 2 hp) but I have not been able to tell and have only noticed better power and more fun. This is a must do mod along with adding a performance exhaust (full or slip on) and a jet kit (Dynojet or Factory). You can install this part on a stock GS without any exhaust or carburetion changes.

Unfortunately, the Vance & Hines ignition advancer is no longer manufactured. However Parts411.com had a special batch made just for them a little while ago. The entire batch promptly sold out.  I am hoping that they can put in another special order and if you are interested as well sign the petition which I shall email to Parts411 so that they are able to see the interest in the Ignition Advancer and order some more.

So has anyone actually done a before/after dyno run?  Seat-of-the-pants dynos are generally VERY inaccurate.

Second the BobB version.  He did mine last winter, took about a week and $5.  Who needs Vance & Hines at $45?

I had one on my modified '01 and even with dyno tuning felt that it really didn't help all that much.  But for $45 I think its worth it, even if the gain is minimal.

Does anyone on this forum do the advancing as a service?

Whats it gonna cost if they do make a special batch?

black and silver twin

I did the DIY advance, although i did it a slightly different way before I knew there was a write up  on it. I took me less than 20 min with a rotozip. basically i just lengthened the pickup plate mounting holes so the plate could be turned ~4.5mm (6*) clockwise (i think, which ever way advanced it i cant remember now.) it made the idle increase a few hundred rpm and it idles so much better and goes off idle much better. and on the dyno there was approximately +.5 horsepower per degree of advancement. I would have gone further but I didnt have the rotozip at the dyno to lengthen them more. if you dont have a rotozip or dremmel then a drill or file works just as well
