Ok so I was just changing my oil and filter.  I replaced the filter and O-ring and was tightening the oil filter cover down and the bottom bolt snapped.  I was using one friggin hand and the damn thing snapped.

Am I correct in assumin that they are simply studs like that of a cars head bolts?  Can I simply grab and and reverse it out and replace it?  And If so what size and hardness do I need to buy?

Any help would be great..

the parts fisches all say it's a 6 x 20 stud bolt.  Does this mean 6mm x 20mm?   Anyone?

Yeah, they are just studs, so you will have to pull he cover back off and hopefully it broke so that you have enough room to grab it. Do a search and you will come up with the size, I remmeber something about a metric waterpump stud that can be found at auto parts stores works.

6mmm X 20mm sounds about right

yeah I pulled the cover back off already and there is enough to grab.  Im finding that not any parts stores carry it.  unfortunately I think im going to have to order them and wait with the GS out of commision until they come it.       It's such a beautiful day and I had a ride lined up with a buddy.  Now im just pissed.

Just a suggestion...

if you can find a matching hex head bolt of appropriate or slightly longer length, just cut off the head or extra bit and use what you need. Try Lowe's, Home Depot,  etc. Their metric stuff is usually in the specialty drawers.

It's worth a try and would be useful to the group to know if they stock something to use/modify.

After all, stud is usually just a bolt without a head.

I did the same thing when I tried to change my oil filter, those studs suxxor. I just went into my local Suzuki dealer and they had a pile of them. The thing I had the hardest time doing was getting the stud out in the first place, it was seized pretty badly. Are you having any problems getting the old studs out?

I havent tried yet.  What problems did you have?  I was going to spray it with some wd40 and let it sit for a little bit then grab it with a pair of pliers.  I'll robably go try in just a minute because im bored.

check my site. theres a page on just this problem, which is a common occurence with the gs.

yeah pretty much what I did already.  Im probably going to look for hardened studs instead of these soft ones that come stock.  I mean for petes sake I was using one hand to tighten..
