Pilot screw and idle madness

So i rejetted (22.5, 67.5, 147.5) installed K&N lunchbox, and V&H SS exhaust on my 2002 gs500k2.  I started it up when we finished and under stock setting, it was running rich, about 1 hour of not working at all, we finally got a setting where it runs, but it only runs with the choke all the way up, and idles at 6k rpm.  if the choke is off, it dies.  Pilot screw  is currently at 1 turn out, and the carbs are backfiring :2guns:, but it stays running with only 1/2 choke and the rpms fluctuate from 1.5 - 4k.  We threw in the towel for the night and are going to start fresh tomorrow with a full fuel tank (only salvaged 1 gallon when we took the tank off) any suggestions to help us find our optimal setting, or at least something that will work...   :dunno_white:

Just to put everybody's mind at easy, the bike is up and running wonderfully.  Turns out once we got someone there who knew carb, it was running way to rich.  He put it to some sort of "standard" setting and adjusted from there.  Now idle is at 1200 rpms, powerband is even all the way through, spark plugs are cleaned, no more backfiring, exhaust sounds wonderful, I'm happy as a pig in poo :icon_mrgreen:. Next week, 15T sprocket and ignition advancer, then I think I'm done for a while (probably not though, I want progressive springs up front, and a gsxr shock out back, maybe even dual front brakes if I'm feeling squirrely).  I also ended up doing a fenderectomy and putting in new rear signal (flush mounts on the side of the remaining fender, pics to follow in a new post once I can take a picture without the stupid sun's glare!!!)  Without this site, I would be riding a very stock bike, and not know half the stuff I have learned in my short career as a bike enthusiast.  Thank you GSTWINS!!! :thumb:

I hope you noticed the FAQ page here. Dgyver's got a great write up on putting a Kat front end on the GS. That's the only dual front rotor "How to" posted here. I heard that some older gixxer front ends can be done, but that also requires some surgery.  If you do it, take good pics. You could be the next FAQ author and share the knowledge and experience.

That's what make GSTwin a super place to be.  :thumb:

Adjusted you mean changed jets? Or needle clip positions? Tell me more about the curing process as i will be rejetting soon myself. Thanks

by adjusting, i mean he changed the mixture screw and idle settings, the bike was running for most of the stuff he did.  I noticed you have a 2002 also, maybe it's just mine, but you may need an impact driver to get tho bowl screws out.  all mine were siezed and eventually stripped trying to get them out.  other than finding a working setup for the mixture and idle screws, that is what took me the longest (because i had to run to my local bike shop to have them take them out) good luck, and have fun

Yes i stripped 6 out of 8 screws instantly  :dunno_white: they are very soft. I took a little metal saw and cut their heads verticaly, and used a flatbed screwdriver afterwards. As somebody mentioned i didnt want to bash on carbs with hammer. I replaced the screws with allen ones (thanks again to gstwins for sizes).

I only ordered 130 mains, and set e-clip on needle 1 step richer, and left pilot stock for now. I have full exhaust (though not very "sport") and a drop in KN filter.

I hope the changes i made will be enough to run good.

Your bike looks very nice. Have good and safe time with it.

So I took the bike on the highway today, and I've got a new problem.  At 8000 rpm, it kinda quits and doesn't want to rev higher, nomatter how much i give it in the higher gears.  Could the mains be too big/small, can i do more adjusting on the mixture screws to fix this, stock, it let off around 10.5k rpm, but that was because the bike had already given all it had.  Low end is a lot quicker, but my top end is suffering, Please Help!!!

EDIT: Moved question to a new thread so the subject relates to problem.
