What demtermines a totaled bike from the insurance company?

TheGoodGuy

cost of repair > cost of bike's value.
'01 GS500. Mods: Katana Shock, Progessive Springs, BobB's V&H  Advancer Clone, JeffD's LED tail lights & LED licence plate bolt running lights, flanders superbike bars, magnet under the bike. Recent mods: Rejet with 20/62.5/145, 3 shims on needle, K&N Lunch box.

In my experience, they will usually total it if the estimated repairs exceed about 80% or so of the value of the vehicle prior to the wreck.  Don't ask me the rationale behind that, but that's what I've seen and heard.
Sorry, I won't answer motorcycle questions anymore.  I'm not f%$king friendly enough for this board.  Ask me at:

I've heard that the percentage is closer to 40-50%.

It should be noted that insurance companies are much more apt to total bikes than cars.  Any frame damage (and I mean *any*) frame damage to a bike in an accident is pretty much an automatic total.

well i haven't had the chance to go over the bike with some detail. since the bike is an 04 the plastics saved the frame. the can is really scratch up if it counts.

I've seen a lot of bikes with fairings damaged for sale, and the owners say that the insurance company totaled the bikes...  I'm guessing that the fairings are too expensive for the insurance companies to repair.

Usually they are. When my bike got tipped over the fairings got scraped up. The insurance didn't total it because it was only one fairing. The exhaust is another SUPER expensive thing to be damaged, because it costs like, $700 for a stock system.

The guages alone are about $400, forks are $400 a piece, meaning $800 for the set.
