I can't figure this one out.  I just finished putting new handlebars on my bike and when I started it in the garage I could rev the bike up and it would drop back down to idle.  Then I took the bike out for a ride and after about 3 tenths of a mile it started sticking at 4000 rpms.  The throttle snaps back and the cable isnt bound up so I cant figure it out.  I jiggled the cable and it wouldnt drop back down but when I shut it off and start it back up again, it idles fine until its driven (then it sticks at 4000 again).  Any ideas would be a great help.

Idle screw set too high.  After the bike is warmed up it idles higher.

Or, since your's isa '97, the choke may be hanging up.  Search 'choke hang/hanging' with my username.  I'll go search as well and post links.

The motorcycle is no longer the hobby, the skill has become the hobby.

Power does not compare to skill.  What good is power without the skill to use it?

So today the bike idles fine???? I put a little extra slack in the throttle cable for good measure.  I havent taken it out today so who knows if it is gonna start its crap up again.  I might go riding with a jacket full of tools just in case...  Oh yeah and I changed the oil and filter with some very expensive amsoil.  So far it makes the bike sound good.  BTW Scratch I am very impressed you remembered my bike is a '97. You kick ass! thanks again, I will update again after I take it out.

I just lubed up the chain and took it out for a spin.  Its all better now and I think it was just the idle adjustment screw.  Sorry for being a NOOB... lol. It still is odd that it would idle differently after its been out on a drive.

Nope, that's normal.  These bikes take a while to get properly warmed up and run correctly.
