On my '90 GS one of the two pipes that run in front of the engine is almost directly in front of the top-left oil filter cover nut. I can't fit either of my socket or adjustable wrenches in there enough to turn it. Is there another way to get it off?

I would say there is something not quite right here,  :cookoo: I just looked at my '03 and another in the 'hood an early-mid nineties model and they are both accessible. Not dead simple a little bit of a fiddle perhaps but simple enough with a small socket wrench and a short extn bar at most. Are you sure your pipes are correctly positioned, could they have had a knock?

Don't forget the "big issue" of possible overtightening when replacing the cover once you get it off. search will show 1001 posts, a couple of good recently, one gave a tourque recomendation of 5 foot lbs. :thumb:
