Just wondering what you guys think about the recommended maintenance schedule as far as these items.

The manual recommend replacing break fluids every 2 years and break hoses every 4 years.  Just wondering how important is the replace fluids rule if the levels are ok.  Is 2 years really enough to make the break fluid go bad, or is it more of a judgement call depending on how the breaking system acts?

The second question is on replacing break hoses.  The hayes manual is pretty terse on this - they just say disconnect the hoses from both ends and replace with new ones :-)  Well yeah, but does anything need to be taken off in order to access all the connections?  :dunno_white:

On a separate note, hope everyone enjoyed the nice day we had today and went out for a loong ride!

You should replace the brake hoses and fluid. The brake fluid CAN go bad in 2 years, and you do not want your brakes working badly. They save you from hitting things. Same thing with the hoses.

It's an easy thing to do, really. Unbolt the hose from the caliper by unscrewing the bolt, then drain the fluid from the hose into a pan or an old oil bottle. Unscrew the banjo bolt from the master cylinder and take the hose completely off. Unscrew the screws holding the top of the master cylinder on and suck out all the fluid in there either by using a turkey baster or one of those plastic needle thingies, or by loosening that mount and turning it over. Be careful not to get brake fluid on your clothes as it is some nasty stuff. Refill the master cylinder with brake fluid and replace the brake lines. Bleed the system and you're done.

I figured out what that thing was called! A SYRINGE!! I couldn't for the life of me remember what the hell it was called. Honestly though, it'd be easier just to dump it out :icon_razz:
