ARRRRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHH!!!

There was this girl who came in last week requesting some materials to be copied, but they had a copyright on them.  So I told her that we could only copy them if we had their permission.

So she comes in today, but she ripped out some pages in the book and said, "Now that they are not in the book, I need them copied." :nono:  I told her that the material was still had a copyright, not just the book.  After trying to explain it to her dumbass-majesty, she wanted to talk to the store manager, and guess what....  She bitched and moaned about me, and he told me to copy it!!!

I hate people who use this tactic to get what they f*cking want.  I want to just slap them most of the time.

Sorry for the rant.

Luckily I work for my dad, so if somebody wants to talk to my boss he's on my side! Or if he's gone, I'm the only one there so I'm my own boss!

it is unfortunate that she got what she wanted.  what really sucks is that your boss reinforced her behavior.  Now she is even more likely to use the tactic again to get something she doesn't deserve.  You did the right thing though... now its your boss's problem if the company gets busted.

Where you at....Kinko's?  Is there a law posted at your workplace that expressly forbids making copies of copyrighted material under any circumstances?  No?  Then give the customer her copies, dammit!

Sorry, no sympathy for a pedant on a powertrip. :nono:

Are you an idiot? Federal copyright law specifically states (and you can read this at the beginning of a book) that a copyrighted work cannot be reproduced without the express written consent of the author or publisher. You're exactly the kinda crappy customer that anyone who has ever worked customer service hates. I'm not trying to start a flame war, but maybe you should be up on things before you start calling people names. He wasn't on a power trip, he was doing HIS JOB. Copyright infringement is punishable with fines and/or jail time. So unless you wanna pony up the money to pay his fines, or volunteer to take his place in a Federal Pound Me In The Ass Prison, STFU and sit down.

My attitude is in serious need of readjustment, and I'm ok with that.

Sadly I agree.  I don't see why somebody has to fish through a book/documents looking for a copyright.  If I take something to be copied I'll take the responsibility -not Kinkos.  Just make the copies and take my money thankyouverymuch.

It's not fishing for it. Anything that's published will have a copyright statement. YOU don't take the responsibility. Even if you want to. If the publisher wants money, they go after An, and then after Kinko's (or whoever he works for). It's a liability for the company. It's the same reason you can't get copyrighted photos duplicated at Wal Mart or CVS, or wherever you go. It's the same as if you stole someone's motorcycle. Then you took the bike to a dealership, to trade it in. The dealership runs the VIN, and finds out the bike is stolen. They don't buy it from you. You then complain "Hey, don't worry about it, I'll take the blame if anything happens, YOU didn't steal it, I did.", and then you throw a hissy fit. I don't get what's so difficult about this. Breaking the law = (for the most part) bad. Yes, it's probably a stupid law, the lady was probably going to use it as part of a lecture or something educational, and non-harmful to the publisher/author. Buuuuuuuuuuuuut... that's not An's decision to make, nor is it the customer's. It's the author/publisher's decision. It's their lifeblood, how they make their money.  An was simply playing the CYOA game, and rightfully so. Hey John, if I asked you to host some full length DVD rips on your server for me, so that I could let all my friends download em, would you do it? Or would you say "No, that's illegal, I'd pay a LOT of money in fines for that!" What if I told you "It's ok dude, if they ask, I'll say I put em up there." I highly, highly doubt you'd do it. Not trying to flame anyone.. but see it from the other side... Would you want to be asked to break the law at your job? And do you EVER, EVER, EVER like it when your boss/coworker contradicts you or makes you look stupid in front of a customer? I don't think so.

I'm not taking sides here, because I believe management could have handled the situation w/o embarrassing our Forum friend. That said, however, I have been advised that the copyright laws apply if the material/logo/idea is reproduced to profit from its reproduction. The copying of an engineering drawing, signage or printed article for personal use is not prohibited. Where's the GS 500 Legal Department! They're probably off on weekends
It's not how fast you go, rather "how" you go fast!

annguyen1981

Actually, the Copyright Law applies even more so when a company is PROFITTING from said copying.  If you have a personal copier, and are copying something for yourself, then that's a gray area.

But if I am copying something for someone else, and MAKING A PROFIT, there's no question about it.  ILLEGAL

It's not a powertrip at all.  I'd much rather prefer to just make the copies and be done with it.  The more money the department makes, the bigger my bonus check.

$$$ CHA-CHING!

But, I'm not gonna risk getting the company involved in a million-dollar lawsuit just because I wanted to get a $20 sale for myself.

Thankz Alpha.  I definitely don't wanna go to "Federal Pount Me In The Ass Prison".  I'd rather be sent to my room at the local "All Girls College where there are no boys, uh...  I mean MEN,  allowed ever".

If copyright infringement occurs, there is a $100,000 fine along with a possible 2-year jail sentence.  If I got caught for doing this, my company would get the fine, I'd be fired, and a lawsuit would be brought against the company.  Not worth it.

I would have directed her to the nearest self-service copy machine - down the street, accross town, somewhere else. Let her make her own damn illegal copies. You can't stop someone from breaking the law, but you can stop them from dragging you in on it. Everyone wins.
