SOUTH BEND, Ind. — Police broke up a melee involving dozens of people at a motorcycle swap meet but made no arrests.
   
Authorities shut down the event at the St. Joseph County 4-H Fairgrounds following the brawl, which broke out Saturday between members of two rival motorcycle gangs, police said.
Two bikers requested medical attention but their injuries were not life-threatening, said St. Joseph County police spokeswoman Jaimee Thirion. Police Cpl. Kent Wickham suffered minor injuries in a traffic accident on his way to the fight.

Dan Hardman, a member of a Christian biker ministry called Bikers at the Crossing, said some of those involved in the brawl used baseball bats, motorcycle forks and hammers as weapons.

"It was pretty ugly," said another witness, Bob Candler of Niles, Mich.
More than 30 police cars from South Bend, St. Joseph County and Mishawaka responded to the scene.

Swap meet organizer Paragon Promotions could not immediately be reached for comment this morning.
