is there a way to check the timing on the gs?

My manual is at my buddies house.

I know how to check via camshaft (the # 1,2,3 markers, r/t marker and 18 teeth) is there another way?  Timing light... etc?

Don't know how I overlooked this post...

Checking the timing of the GS engine with a timing light shouldn't be difficult; though I've never done this to a GS engine (or any other two-cylinder four-stroke engine), the process should be the same as for most motorcycle engines. First, start with a warmed engine. If the engine won't start without the aid of the choke, it is too cold for this test. Once the engine is thoroughly warmed (ride it for thirty minutes or so), place it on the centerstand in neutral, remove the timing cover (right side), and hook a timing light to the #1 spark plug wire (left side).

Next, start the engine and let it idle; check to see if the |R-T timing mark on the signal generator rotor is illuminated by the strobe when it is aligned with the center of the pickup coil. Next, rev the engine to ~5K RPM; the |F timing mark should now be aligned with the center of the pickup coil. Unless I miss my guess, that should be a valid way to check the engine timing...

Again, I've never done this to a GS engine (my timing light is on loan right now), but this method should work for you. When I FINALLY get my timing light returned (I freely admit, I loan out too many tools, but that's what friends are for), I'll check this procedure on my GS and let you know the results. In the meantime, you should try this technique yourself and report your results here...
