w/o tankbag w/o backpack - is there any place on the GS to place a disc lock?

So disk locks just clamp on to the disk of the front brake? How secure are they? I like the size, look, and alarm capability of the Xenas.
1996 Black GS, stock except for where previous owner broke things

The Luma Xmart linked earlier in this thread looks pretty cool.  It is "stored" on your bike as a footpeg.  You take it off to use it as a disc lock.  If you forget and try to ride off without taking the lock off, you'll know as soon as you try to shift gears.  Pretty clever.

I did a quick search and it's also available in the US, here.

That US distributor doesn't list an adapter for the GS500, and the Euro site says out of stock till Mar 30.
How would (did) you put it on?

a few months ago I was thinking of getting a disclock, but I ended up getting a rootweiler chain/lock (onguard). it is freakin thick and flexible. I use it on my rear tire, that way of the bike is stolen, at least I'll have some evidence (a tire) and maybe even some fingerprints.
Caturday yet?

I don't own one.  But the Luma site lists the adaptor as KAXSUZ3 which is available at the site I posted earlier.  I don't know if it's in stock though.

If you get one, let us know how you like it!

I use a Joe Rocket Manta Tank Bag (its on the smaller side of th scale)...

I like it a lot as it fits nicely on top of the tank and "goes" with the bike. I put my cell, wallet, and gloves in it. The main pouch can fit a fast food bag etc. :)

I looked at the tour master site - the super mini is kind of cool

Super mini is too effing small to do any good. The mini magnetic has been perfect for me - can fit gatorade, spare helmet shield, all kinds of other random crap, and has a map pocket. JMHO.

I purchased it first due to its thick construction (thicker must mean harder to cut right )

the alarm is a nice little addition that not only warns you if someone has jumped on your ride, but if you jump on and forget to remove the lock (prevents nasty accidents). It comes with a nice little storage puch that you can strap to your handle bars, or place it under your seat.

I doubt GS500 owners have anything to worry about, except maybe 04'-06' models.

but if you are in a high riskk area, brake discs locks aren't the best way to go.  an actual chain or lockable steel loop is better. simple because a brake disc is easily shattered with a ballpeen hammer and easily replace for a few bucks.

a bike thief probably wouldn't want your bike too ride anyway. if they own the same bike as you and wreck it,  it is easier to steal your for parts.

or if they are in a real theft ring they will be selling your bike for parts anyway.

oh well if they want your bike and you leave it outside then its theres. use a brake lock at least to make it dificult.
also lock your handlebar.  then they'd have to haul the bike.

well, not really but I won't explain how to bypass that.  :thumb:

my logic is if they really want the bike, or any of my crap for that matter, they'll take it regardless of what measures I put in place

a few guys could pick up your bike and put it in the back of a pick up in a matter of seconds

a few REALLY BIG guys.    I  tried this with SIX guys and we still ended up dropping her on the truck twice.  and it took an hour.  And these guys were ARMY.

your right though, IF I want your bike I'm gonna take regardless.  I mean them o'course.

Bikes are just as easy as cars to steal.  A disc lock will only stop a casual thief.   I once pulled off with my disc lock on and jammed up the locking mechanism.   It took me less than 10 min to cut through it with a metal grinder.  The grinder I used was powered by compressed air... but I imagine you could do it in 15 min with a battery powered grinder from the home depot.

Needless to say, a 10-15 min deterrent isn't much of a fool-proof deterrent if your bike is being taken at night or something.

The ignition can be screwdrivered pretty easily.   If you are really worried and want to be sneaky, yank the coils off the spark plugs... it won't stop an attentive thief, but might stop the punk-on-a-lark who just happened by your ride.

I heard of using a hidden kill switch for your electricals.

at least they would'nt ride off with it.

I like to play with 20kV flyback transformers cause I'm a dork and like big sparks.  I've always thought it would be fun to wire one up to a car or bike to give any would-be theif/passer by a good shock   :icon_twisted:

careful....with that. ya might get sued.

the potential thief could say he was just trying to move the bike.

Oh I know I would be sued, that's why I haven't done it yet.  It would be good for some shits and giggles to sit inside and watch people get shocked as they tried to walked by.  :icon_lol:

I knew a guy, who knew a guy, who had a gf that knew a guy........

that put a motion sensor on his bike and the alarm said "please stand back, you are too close to the vehicle"

the theives kept setting it off while the guy was away killing his battery.  the neighbors were happy to see it go.  no witnesses though.

I don't know if its true. but its funny.

The harder you make it to steal, the more potential thieves you eliminate from the picture. That's my theory.

What would be the best place to add a kill switch?

(I'm asking this without searching, I'm a bwaaaad wittle bwoy!)

anywhere.  any automotive switch will work.  most thieves wouldn't even think to look for one.

also something inconspicous so you can disable the elecs w/o being obvious.

be sure to splice the ignition switch not the big red wire to the batt.
