Sounds good, Dave. Keep the fun parts for the new bike, as they'll work on either. Hell, if you get one of the old styles you could probably fab up a GSX-R 750 tail to make it all racey like!

This is the hardest thing ever. I'm getting sad just thinking about someone else rubbing their crotch all over her saddle. Well, at least I have great memories and have learned so much on her. Now to find another one for sale near here. God, is school really worth it? Of course it is, but still...

Speaking of, there's a hot GSX-R for sale on craigslist. It's got sweet purple and blue paint, just like a bike from 1992 should. However, I'm trying to keep the cost of ownership down, so I'm gonna have to let someone else ride that purple beauty into the sunset. Pandy? Wink.

Thanks guys, I'll let you know what happens. And let me know if you spy any good deals on a GS.

I'll definitely keep an eye out on eBay for you, as I'm sure you'll be checking CL more frequently for your area than I would be.

Yeah, I'm on CL everyday looking for bikes just for fun, so now it's gonna be more serious. This is sad, man. I am gonna have a hard time. But then again, it's always been a dream of mine to have a hot girl and then her older sister, so I guess this is as close to it as I'm ever gonna get. Wink.

My friend, who's a miser and hoards every cent she has, is gonna spot me 2 grand to pay off the loan and get the title in my hand, making a sale that much easier. shaZam!, it's all worth it so I don't have to pack my bags and move in with my family again.

How did I? I went into my account settings and changed my display name. Am I not supposed to be able to do that?

I think it's kind of a funny name, now that I look at it. Everyone was calling me PDX or Portland, and I wanted to try to make my name show up so people could call me by it. I was trying to make it so I still had that PDX username but the "my name is dave" thing would show up under it or something. I have no idea. Could somebody get me a Tab though? All this computer hacking is making me thirsty...

Ok, so just a little update...

Last night my friend gave me that loan to pay off my GS and get the title so I can sell it. But I wrestled with the thought of it all night, and did a little work on my finances this morning. When my car is sold and the insurance is taken off, my monthly bills are down to $800, and that includes the GS payment. So I could work just a little to make some money, plus the money my mom is gonna give me to help with bills, plus financial aid...I think I can do this and stil hold on to the one thing I can't go without- my GS.

So for $800 I can still live in the house I'm at now, keep my GS (although I'm gonna be driving a hooptie when I sell my car, but I'm over it), and can go to school and not have to work insane hours. This might work!

No, I can't even imagine. People were in shock when I said I was gonna sell it, because everyone knows how much I love that bike. A few people even offered to give me some money to help pay it off so I can keep it.   Obsess much, Dave?

I'm willing to move back in with my mom if it means keeping my bike. Stupid? No, I say passionate.  :thumb:

OK, quick question. So my mom and I talked last night about school, and the program's $25K for a year and is very intense. So I really won't be able to work at the same time, and I'd rather not pile living expenses into that debt and make it closer to $40K by the time I leave Pacific. So it's an all-out streamlining of my finances, including me moving home in a month. Now I'm going to hold onto the GS until I absolutely have to sell it. So if I am to sell it...

Are the other good bikes for $2K I should look into? To be honest, I see GS' here for sale about as often as I see naked models laying in my bed. And I'd rather not sit around witing all summer for one to pop up (but wnough about the models...), so I want to have a few options JUST IN CASE I have to sell my little lady.

So what's a good bike in that general price range that won't take more time to fix than ride? Something economical and fun at the same time. I see old GSX-R's and CBR's (first or early second gens) for sale at a little over $2K, and I like those a lot. But I wouldn't get one if it meant a lot of time under the wrench. What about old Honda CB's? I see the occasional CB350 cafe racer around here for a little over $1K. I even like Srinath's VX800, but he lives way the hell out in like Europe or something. That's too far away.

Basically, I want to ride. While the twisties are my favorites, just riding to and from work is exciting for me. So it need not be a perfect replacement for the GS, so long as it runs and runs well. I do like the old sportbikes, like I said, but I wouldn't get one if it was highly recommended against.

Just for example's sake, here's an old 750 I found with a quick search. Higher than I can spend, but bargaining never hurt: http://portland.craigslist.org/mcy/153910732.html
Also an old CBR, just for another example:
http://seattle.craigslist.org/mcy/152933859.html
And an old CB360:
http://portland.craigslist.org/mcy/154175350.html

Thanks kids.

The CBR is your best bet at this point.  The fact that the 750 needs a tune-up, could hide other problems.  And, the CB360 has points ignition.  Have you ever heard of points?  If you haven't, definitely DO NOT get this, or any other bike that has points!!

Have I heard of points? Well how dare you, how old do you think I am? Well, I'm 26, so I suppose you're right, but I taught myself how to work on cars on my '74 Super Beetle and I have an '81 Honda scooter, so I know points. But I could avoid them if need be.

So Scratch, you see my point, right? While I would love another GS, it may not be feasible and thus I have to look at other options. The depression of moving home will be great enough, so I need a bike to cure that.

The bikes I posted were merely quick examples of what's out there, not bikes that I'm looking at right now. So let me know if there are better options. I want sporty, but can handle anything. So if one of the old sportbikes is known for reliability and another is known for problems (early Interceptors come to mind, if I remember right), that's what I need to know. That will help me out soooooo much.

Thanks guys. I know the "need advice for next bike" topic has been beaten to death, but I think this is a different situation as I'm getting retrofitted, and thus warrants discussion.

Thanks guys and gals.

Yeah, my "how dare you" was sarcastic. I'm over it. So you're old, big whoop. Wink.

Sure, I would love for you to look at craigslist for me in those 2 markets. I'm not buying right now, but it will be very soon if it happens and I'd like to see what you have to say about what's out there currently. I started this thread, and I have no problem with you posting your findings here so I and the others can see and discuss.

Thanks Scratch, I really appreciate it!

Any price range, model preferences, or age restrictions?

Please list in order:

Price: $minimum - to - maximum
Age: example: nothing more than 5 years old
Mileage: either list total miles or mileage per year (nothing more than 8000miles or 1500miles/year)
Models: (Would prefer in order)Honda
Kawasaki
Suzuki
Yamaha

I'm not too picky, really. But I'll do what I can:

Price: $0-$2500
Age: Any. In my price range, I'd expect to see the first and some early second generations of sportbikes. I love the first-gen CBR Hurricanes and GSX-Rs, but that's just me. Anything newer than '93 for under $2500 is probably wrecked or has a blown motor.
Mileage: Not important, but should be considered along with type of bike. A '91 CBR with 40K on the clock is a lot different than a '91 GS with the same mileage; the GS is still a baby, while the CBR is older than you, Scratch  ;)
Models: Again, I'm open. But if I had to...
Suzuki
Honda
Yamaha
Kawasaki

In the end, something sporty and under $2500 is what counts. No massive SuperSports (Hurricane 1000 and the like) please. 600 is great, 750 will be considered.

Man, thanks so much. If I do need to sell and you have found a good replacement for my baby, I will seriously owe you.

This was the middleweight sportbike to own.  All four air-cooled cylinders and shaft drive.  It looks all original, 'cept the seat.

Hmm...just your age...and it has electronic ignition (http://portland.craigslist.org/mcy/154055380.html see, told ya).

http://portland.craigslist.org/mcy/154580197.html
Needs a special carb balancing tool, 'bout $18-50 depending where you get it.

HOOOOO!!  Here's a fun one!  BTW, they didn't make 'em in '86; they stopped makin' the 500 in '85.

If you want to try a different flavor.

http://portland.craigslist.org/mcy/154416105.html
I wouldn't do this to ya.  It's a SeCa, not a Sega; named for Kenny Robert's win at Laguna Seca.  Creamed tank is what scares me, that and 10yrs storage.

http://portland.craigslist.org/mcy/154311104.html
Dream come true.  This was my first motorcycle, without the backrest.  47 degree lean angles.  Fastest production 650 for it's year (even faster than the 650 Seca!).

Giving old people shaZam! is my hobby. Ask my mom about that (she's 56, which is like Devonian to me).

I like the Yami 650 and the Interceptor a lot. I actually looked at the first 2 you posted (Yami 650 and GS 850) and liked them. I'd pass on the Maxim. The Interceptor is sweet though. I thought I read somewhere about big problems with early ones though. Mayber that was the VFR-800. I can't recall now.

I could put some different bars and such on the GS850 and make it sportier, couldn't I? Just curious...

shaZam!, that Interceptor is really tempting. I'll have to keep that in mind. But the fact of the matter is that there are good options out there, which makes me happy.

Thanks. I will let you know what I end up doing. And at that point, we can go for round 2 of bike-hunting.

Honestly, don't get the older GS's, because they use a paper gasket for the valve cover, which means you will have to replace that gasket every time you do a valve adjustment; and that's a major pain in the a$$ and very time consuming.  Unless you enjoy scraping gasket.

The early 500's and 750 VFR's had crank bearing issues, '83-84.  Should have been recified through recalls.

Also, see previous my post above for a few more, I modified it.
