Uhhh Dave, I think you did research and/or math wrong or don't know that power to weight ratio is measured in lbs/HP. The last gen of the ZZRs made 98HP and weighed 430 lbs dry. The new ones weigh 377lbs and have 110HP, so the power to weight ratio would be 4.3878 and 3.4273 respectively.

The SV's is 5.1667 and the GS's is 9.0168.

Forgive me if my numbers are wrong; like I said, my research was quick and easy, just to give him some sort of idea. So I can accept that the weights and HPs for each bike that I listed are wrong.

HOWEVER, unless my math knowledge is completely f%&ked, "power-to-weight" is calculated as I said, with the HP as the numerator and the vehicle's weight as the denominator. Your calculation is a weight-to-power ratio; that is, there are 9.0168 lbs. per horsepower on the GS.

I think you have it backwards alpha... power to weight ratio should be 1 when there is as much HP as it weighs, and less than one as power decreases / weight increases.  Higher the power weight ratio, there faster the bike.  If the GS was a p/w ratio of ~9 then this is an ungodly fast bike

Well, blame the stupid motorcycle magazine that tested the ZX-10R and claimed it as having the best power to weight ratio of any motorcycle out there, and stating it as a 1.4 something, I think.

That's their bad. In that case, the bike puts out 1.4 times as much power as it weighs. So...that would be a rocket. It's a fast bike, but not that fast. Probably the closest sportbike to a 1:1 ratio is Ghostrider's twin-turbo Hayabusa, which puts out a reputed 499 bhp. A stock 'Busa weighs 478 lbs dry. Add 20 for the turbos (I have no idea what a twin-turbo setup weighs), and you have a ratio of almost exactly 1:1.

Destro

I think it is stated as a ratio, I am guessing the ZX-10R is probably 1:4, a speed triple is 1:4.42, and a ZZR600 is 1:4.92.  according to mcnews.com in their model evaluation section.  See a nice write up of the zzr vs other older 600s here:

Naw, I've heard of 700HP busas before.

See: http://thekneeslider.com/archives/2005/03/10/700-horsepower-hayabusa/

Which, assuming again a base weight of 478 lbs, gives us the lovely 1.4 power-to-weight ratio. Nooooooo thank you!

And Destro is probably right that they were typed as ratios, not as a decimal. 1:4 sounds better for the ZX-10R.

He was running an NLR Turbocharger and converted his bike to run on methanol. Stock bore 1300, too. Not one of the 1500cc stroker kit engined ones.

This is where you take over, because like I said, I'm wicked stupid about cars. I get that he didn't bore it out, but what's the big deal about the NLR Turbo?

That busa is nuts.  I'm not surprised they did it with a stock stroke/bore.  When you increase the stroke, you gain torque, but you can't rev it as high and thus less HP.  And remember kiddies, there is a replacement for displacement, its called high RPM and forced induction  :thumb:

And I've never heard about an NLR turbo... I did a google seach and it just comes up with a bunch of busa bull shaZam!, so maybe its a turbo designed for the busa  :dunno_white:

If by "track" you mean dragstrip, then yes. However, the "track" is a more common term for a REAL race track, not a quarter mile straightaway.

Depends on the track and rider. The SV is a killer track tool, especially for really technical stuff, but the ZZR, which is the old Ninja 600, will stomp it in the sweepers and straights.

you see nicky, on the track and the strip, its just as much the machine as it is the driver... a good driver on a slower bike will aways beat a shitty  driver on a faster bike

Big Nick, promise me you won't buy a Hayabusa. Ever. If you can promise me that, I will send you a variety pack of decals for your bike, including ninjas, bullets, dragons, tons of flames, poison ivy, robots, cannons, flags, and black flowers.

Ok Nicky, just making sure. But so you know, the flowers were black, which means they're dead. That's hardcore.
