Hey peeps i rode my new gs500f about 4 times last year b4 putting it away and it ran like new.

Now i goto start it up this week and it wont idle without the choke on. I Left the choke on running it for over 2 mins and it starts right up no problem but it idles like crap!

Also if you give it some gas from the throttle the engine just cuts out and dies. it only runs with the choke on.

B4 storing, i did ALL the steps the manual says todo: added fuel stabalizer, put a tsp on oil in cylinders, removed battery and charged it monthly.

It sounds like theres water the in carbs or something small i was going to try and run gas line antifreeze thru the tank and see what happens.

any ideas!?
thanks!

Runs with choke -> probably lean.

Might be clotted jets, despite the stabilizer. Did you just dump the stabilizer in, or ensure that this got to the carbs somehow?

^^ Good point!

You have to run your bike for a minute or so once you ad the stabiliser to allow it to get into the carbs  8)

Yup in the fall i dumped the stabalizer in there with a full tnak of gas and let it run for about 10 minutes. Something definately sounds clogged up and i was thinking the jets too.

argh im so fuel injected oriented lol. whats the best method to clean the carbs?

And yes it does sound like its running lean. very lean!

OK so she now starts OK! yipee!!!

i drained the gas tank and added freash fuel and took off the air filter and sprayed WD-40 into the carbs and i can now give it gas and the engine revs smoothly.

one problem tho, i was playing around with the idle screw and now its so low it wont even idle lol....Which way do you turn it to raise the rpm's?

thanks again!

Mandres

Thread the screw in (clockwise, looking at it from the underside of the bike) to raise the idle speed.

I bought an '05 last September, put about 1,500 miles on it by November, spent a couple hours 'winterizing' it for storage... A few weeks ago I pulled it out and it wouldn't start! Kept cranking.. and cranking.. Only to find out that I forgot to put one of the plug wires back on after spraying fogging oil into the cylinders!   :icon_rolleyes:

must be nice lol i wish mine was that simple!

OK so i tried adj the idle screw when the engines warm and it still wont idle, ive turned to idle screw so far it started to feel loose and wanted to come out and it still isnt idling properly.

I bought carb cleaner spray and removed the air filter and sucked it into the carbs a few times still wont idle with no choke.

I tried running carb cleaner thru the gas as well still nuthin!

Im guessing the jets are clogged up? thats the only thing left that i can think of.
