We got it. I bought the 4 codes off eBay for $1.45, which was a good deal.

Anyone want the 3 other codes? I could either post them here or just send them in a PM. Let me know what I should do.

I would suggest a dell latitude notebook or a IBM/lenovo T series laptop.

Home user laptops are complete trash compared to business class notebooks. Sure the business class notebooks are not as flashy, but they're reliable, and you'll be able to find parts and recieve support either directly or indirectly for as long as you own the laptop.

I sold dell products to small and medium sized offices for several years, and i must say that the inspiron laptops are only worth your time you're willing format them the second you get them and load on a professional windows operating system such as windows 2000, or windows xp pro. And you kind of just have to accept that they're disposible laptops, they're meant for grandma, mom and dad to surf the net for 500 bucks.

Cool, thanks. It's been ordered, but it's still cool to read good reviews on it.

I'm just gonna live with Media Center, I think. I don't want to muck this thing up before I even get to school, so I'm gonna run it how it is. I'm thinking about deleting all the crap programs and sweeping the registry to clear that crap out, but that's for another day.

media center is a joke but it's basically a windows xp home edition. on another news, i have vista beta running on a new computer...it's pretty cool but still not "pretty" as osx.

Microsoft is very friendly to students and education.  If you're a college student, you may be able to get a XP Pro upgrade for $5 from your school that will upgrade anything 98 or newer to XP Pro.  Or if you're a techy major and your school participates is the MS Alliance program, you can get everything other than Office for free.  I have legit coies and licenses of XP Pro, 2000 Pro, and Visual Studio.NET that I downloaded from Microsoft for free.  Anyway, I would talk to the computer people at your school before you go spending all the extra money to upgrade to a useful OS and see if they have any kind of deals.  Or you could use one of those 'other' OS's freely available all over the web.

And IMO the best laptops you can get are IBMs.  They are very professional machines and you just can't beat them.  My second favorite would have to be Dell's.  I use an old 650 MHz Dell laptop for tuning EFI and I would gladly take that thing over my brand new Averatec 1.8 GHz POS.  (yeah Averatecs are dirt cheap, but super crappy)

ibm (lenovo) is too old school and you pay extra for it's name just like sony. consider macbook pro is you have the money to spend. you can duel boot or should i say multi boot with xp/osx/linux.

Ok the kiddies at Yale have t-shirts that say that since they hate Harvard, ya know!!!

and the VD is reference to venereal disease.  Harvard has the letters "V" "D" in it and if you took those letters out it wouldnt spell Harvard now would it.

+1111112312312311 A LOT!!

Check for the academic alliance thing. I got an email one day "Hi, would you like free stuff that normally costs lots of money, and you can have it legally? Cool, click here!"

It was great. I had a pirated copy of XP Home, now I have a legal copy of Pro.. awesome. If you DO get the academic alliance thing, you should know that it only works when you open the download in IE.. it won't work in firefox. Don't ask how long it took me to figure that out...

My attitude is in serious need of readjustment, and I'm ok with that.

Yeah, I know. But I visit this site through my phone 90% of the time, and I have java script off to speed shaZam! up, so I can't use smileys. I've been told this many times, so now I throw in the "wink" to designate a joke. I forgot it there. Wink.

And...this sounds like SPAM that I would delete. The Academic Alliance thing is real though? I need to get on this, stat!

$13? Is that if you pay to have the CD shipped to you? They should offer you the option to download a 700mb .iso file that you burn to a CD and have your disc instantly, with no charge.
