Where to get a gas cap

Well the bike i just bought's previous owner (Jake D) was having problems with the cap appearantly not venting and a vacum buliding up in the tank. From what I was told the cap was for a GSXR so the speculation is that perhaps this cap was for a fuel injected bike and there for did not vent or at least not in the manner the original cap would have.

Where can i pick up a new, compatable, venting GS cap?

Thanks in advance,
Toby

There's one going on ebay and ends in a day. A little pricey though. Search ""gs 500 gas." Try the for sale adds here. Or a dealership. good luck.

I've searched the FS section here and had a WTB post  for a couple weeks and gotten nowhere. I saw the one on ebay and am watching it, but if that falls through i was just curious where i can get one. The only place online that i've found that lists them is bikebandit and they want $130 for one and that's just insane.

What about drilling a pin sized hole into the cap you do have?

would that be possible?

I remember JAKED's thread on this issue.

Other wise Ebay is the way to go. I've seen em for $9.99  at time or two.
Not the brightest crayon in the box, but I can still be seen from a distance.  ;P

i thought about that but it seemed like i would run the risk of letting gas out as well as air in.

Has the cap been disassembled and cleaned?  I've always heard that the caps on all Suzuki sportbikes are the same, maybe yours is just clogged up?  If you lift the cap you'll see the vent ports on the underside.  Try blasting a little carb cleaner into them and see if the passages are clear.  Shield your eyes first, if they are clogged then it's going to spray back in your face.  Ask me how I know!

I haven't disassembled and cleaned it since i got the bike. But it was suggested to me by some other people (abd perhaps this is wrong) that if the gas cap came from a FI bike then it might not have a vent like the carb'ed GS500.

Does anyone know if this is the case? The cap "fits" the bike in the sense that it will bolt in place but something is not right becasue it's allowing a vacum to form.

I don't think it matters if it is FI or carb'd.  Yeah, FI pumps the fuel at a higher pressure, but the net flow rate of fuel leaving and air coming in the tank is no more then a carb'd bike.  If anything, I'd think even with different engines a carb'd bike would suck more fuel around idle then a FI bike, soley because carbs are less effiecent.

While I don't know for sure, I would put my money on that it doesn't matter, and that they are probably the same gas cap.  Do what Mandres said and check if their clogged
