Sad stories...

Tonight has been one of those nights.  Cruising the motorcycle forums and all I see is sad stories.  Reading about accidents and people getting hurt.  No matter the reason, it gets me down.  As some of you know, I'm getting married in 2.5 weeks.  It scares me to think of something going wrong.  At any given time there is a million factors working against the guy straddling a stick with an engine on public roadways.  I'm not even talking about safe, attentive riding because that can only get you so far.  Freak accidents can, and do happen.  Sure I'm at risk of a freak accident sitting here in my computer chair...but there's something to be said for minimizing your risk of injury or death.  I love the sport, but how much?

Ever have one of these nights?  I wish all of you safe travels.

TragicImage

I have had these moments, although they were for various other sports/hobbies.

Downhill Mountainbiking and Freestyle snowboarding.

I've been injuried severly doing both, and actually had a friend die this season snowboarding....

And how I justify it is, I'm doing what I love, and the people who have died from no fault of their own, while tragic, were also doing what they loved.

You must weigh your thoughts against your own convictions, because no one can make a life decision for you.

Did "Some Dude" have a family depending on his income?  I've heard all the cliche phrases about living fast, dying young and leaving behind a big fat corpse.  I just know there would be a handful of people FURIOUS at me if I died on a motorcycle.  It wouldn't matter if it was my fault, or if I died "doing what I love"...I still died on a motorcycle.

"'cause when you're dead, you're f%$king dead" - Some movie I can't recall.

If you're that worried about it, ship your bike to me...  I'll ride it for ya'.

Or better yet, get life insurance...  That will allow your wife/kid/etc to pay the bills long enough to find a new husband/daddy/etc.   :thumb:

Hey turd, The quote said nothing about living life in the fast lane, or on the edge. You know even if you ride safe some ass could make it your last day. The same shaZam! could happen in a car. I have been married for the past 3yrs and i have twin girls on the way. If the people that care for you would be "FURIOUS" if you died on your bike may be you should stop riding.

The answer isn't to stop riding...that's rediculous. He's doing what he loves, regardless of whether other people agree with that or not. If they don't, that's their problem. Would these people get mad if you got killed driving to work in your car? Same principle, but you don't have to stop driving, right? I say, don't stop riding, just stop surrounding yourself with people who can't respect your passion for it, regardless of whether they agree with it or not.

i know how you feel about the family thing.  i get married in a month and a half.

thats basically the reason i wont take my fiancee on a ride with me or i really dont want her to get her own bike and ride.

on the other hand i cant not do things because im scared something will happen.  the only thing i can count on if i die is knowing my wife and kids will have money(life insurance) that will last for a little while.

Don't run with scissors.
Don't make faces or it will stick that way.
Stop playing with that or you will go blind.
All the hazards that we are told about life are not necessarily true, at least not the last one.

As David Hough says, look at the statistics and don't listen to the pseudo professionals.
Motorcycling is like aviation, it is all about risk management.  You can't prevent everything, but you attempt to control as much of your situation as possible.

If I remember the story correctly, with the flip of a coin, the Big Bopper won a seat on the plane with Buddy Holly.  For all the care that you take, at some point Sh17 happens.

Get a bike, take proper precautions, enjoy life.

How did the human race ever make it this far without safety precautions?  :dunno_white:

This far?  Is this far considered progress?

Keep the bike.   Once you are a few hours into  :cookoo:MARRIAGE   you'll want to take a ride.

Hahaha!  Awesome.

No, I was never considering giving up the bike.  I always wonder what will happen once kids come into the picture (ahhhhh!) though.

If you're a good parent, you won't really care about riding (or anything else) any more...

If you're like my parents, you'll make a copy of the house key and hand it to your 5 year old kid so you can stay out all night drinking, doing coke, and f%$king.
