Tranny Slipping on Rough Road?

Hi-

I've had a 2001 GS500 for a couple months and love it!

One thing I've noticed is when I drive on an area of rough road (think railroad tracks or patched potholes) the engine will rev a bit and I feel a slight power loss.  It happens quickly and then all is back to normal.  It is most noticable when I'm accelerating, but also can happen at a steady speed (say 35 MPH or higher).

A buddy of mine says that this is caused by the rear tire leaving the ground ever-so-slightly.  To me, it feels like the jolt of the bump makes the tranny or clutch lose pace and slip.

I'm a new rider, so maybe this is something that happens on all motorcycles or on all GS500's?  Or, is there a problem lurking?

THANKS!  I've been eavesdropping on this site for a while.  I'm soooo glad I found it!

uhm, its probably not your transmission, MAYBE your clutch, but I'm with your friend, you're just loosing contact.

Hipocracy.... becoming more acceptable with the more power you think you have.

1.  If the contact patch on your rear tire gets too small to keep traction, you might spin the tire.
2.  If the road surface is slippery and/or loose, you might spin the tire.

When you loose traction while going straight, the engine will rev, your speed will drop slightly (while slipping), then usually jerks forward with a jolt.

What he said. Hell, I used to do it all the time in my Mustang just for fun!

Hang out there, we may flame, but we don't hate.

My attitude is in serious need of readjustment, and I'm ok with that.

yep loss of traction is what it sounds like . because its only happing on rough roads.. all the tire has to do is loss just enough trackson to spin .

The motorcycle is no longer the hobby, the skill has become the hobby.

Power does not compare to skill.  What good is power without the skill to use it?
