how do you know if your carbs are out of balance

when i twist the throttle i can see one of the flaps in the very front raise up then i twist more i see the second flap raise up is this normal

if they are out of balance how do you balance them with out the fancy tools

well... there are 2 ways to balance the carbs... well... 3 but the third really isn't balancing.

1.  You can buy either mercury tubes or a vacume meter.  (mercury tubes are expensive but vacume meters can be had for like 5-10 bucks)

You take the nipple off the top of the carb (being that there are 2 carbs there are 2 nipples) and thest each of them one at a time.  With the bike running at idle and having been warmed up test the vacume from each side.  If they are not the same (or close to that) they are not balanced.  You would turn the screw where the throttle cable connects to the carbs to adjust one side (i dont remember which side) and move the idle screw to adjust both at the same time

2.  Get on the FAQ section of the section and make your own vacume tester (its called something else but I can't remember what) and test as above.

3.  I've heard talk about testing them by measuring the light that comes through the butterfly valves when held up towards the light trying to visually balance like so... i dont believe this is an accurate way to do this at all because the individual cylinders can have a different amount of vacume pull
