im shure a million ppl have asked the same question but heres the jist of my problem.

the bike is a 2001 and is all stock.  it runs shitty below 3500-4000 rpm, lots of surgeing, no power, sometimes it pops out the carbs, usualy more so when not totaly warm but sometimes when hot as well.

my gut tells me that it is lean at low rpm, when i pulled the plugs, they are nice and tan'ish brown collor witch tells me that its not too lean???  i usualy ride between 4 to 5k to avoide the afore mentioned, seems to fun perfect above 4.

so im wondering if it is realy lean at low rpm or if i might have anouther problem.

what does everyone think?
speed is my drug of choice, let me drive...

Installing or making Ignition Advancer might help. It helps below 4k rpm.
Also upgraded pilot jet might help too.

'02 GS500 Yellow, Mods: K&N drop in w/o restrictor, BSM full exhaust, 132.5/60/17.5 (e-clip @ 4), progressive springs, katana rear shock ('01), fenderoctomy,  sleek mirrors, loud dual automotive horn, warmed grips(home made), SS front brake line.

idle and just off idle are mainly the pilot jet - upping it one size REALLY halps on a 2001.  Just pulling the plug after normal running around will give you a pretty mixed picture with most of the color on the plug comming from the running around part - not the just off idle part so, it is probably telling you that at higher (but not WFO throttle openings things are fine)

From just off idle to about 3/4 throttle things are mainly controlled by the needle hieght - putting a washer or two under the clip will help move the needle out of the way a bit faster - giving you a little richer mix and, on my bike, went a long way towards correcting that soft spot.

Do not expect this engine to really pull until higher rpm though - it won't.

And, the advancer advice is spot on - it will also help.  With K&N, one up on pilot and mid-main, 147.5 main, a single washer under the clip and a slip-on my bike will pull full throttle from about 2500, when warmed up, and not buk, pop or spit back through the carbs - give it a try.

Yep, it's normal, there's no power (er, not a lot) under 4k rpm.
The motorcycle is no longer the hobby, the skill has become the hobby.

Power does not compare to skill.  What good is power without the skill to use it?
