You can lead a bike to the pump, but you can't make it drink.

Alrighty gear heads. Another one from the noobcake.

My bike will only swallow 2 - 2.5 gallons, it's a 1990 E, what the heck?

I hit reserve after like 120 miles of normal riding.
Rich, RIP.

you should put it on the centerstand or keep it up right, and that helps alooooooooooooottttt

rangerbrown

humm, i pump 4.1 gal every time, with 280 on the speedo, thats 68mpg, and i sit on the bike holding it up pumping.

i fill 10 liters after about 170 km's. so that about the same. people who say they get 280 miles to a tank must be magic. or my bike gets shaZam! milage.

makenzie71

wow...I put 4 gallons in my TL and only get 120 miles...

nothing but HWY miles to and from work at 70mph

Do you fill up when you hit reserve or milk it?  Because I end up putting 3 gallons in whenever I hit reserve.

CirclesCenter

The second I hit reserve I pull up my mental map of the closest gas stations that do not actively oppose my political agenda (Anything not owned by Exxon/Mobil). I target the closest one and run over kittens, puppies, small children and baby birds on my way.

hmm, I'll try that filling it up while it's upright thing

calamari

After reserve, I always put 3.6 - 3.8 gallons, and it won't drink more  :dunno_white: I fill it up with the bike in upright position (me seating on it).

05F CA model.
Caturday yet?

I've seen a guys crotch catch fire while he was filling his bike. He remained seated on the bike while he was pumping. It was nothing serious, just a fireball the size of 2 basketballs, some singe marks on his shirt. The friction from the dude moving on the seat most probably created a static charge and when he touched his hand to a metal surface a sprk occured igniting the fumes around the filler hole / tank.
Also if you fill your bike like this it is easy to spill fuel on yourself.
WARNING: Death may occur if taken seriously.

rangerbrown

when i fill i go about a .5" past the flange in the tank, that may be why i got more :dunno_white:

When I had my gs I could get about 11-12 litres of petrol in when it hit reserve. I think the petcock for the on position was a bit high.

Stephen072774

remember that there are 2 different size tanks on the GS, Rangerbrowns' bike will hold almost a gallon more than a pre-2001 model.

[KJB edit: Changed "atleast" to "almost"  (4.5 gals vs 5.3 gals) and "2000" to "2001".]

Yeah, until they need a question answered....  (Did I just say that? )

I could have done the edit in "stealth mode", but I feel obliged to document how & why I change a post.  Especially since the new message board had to go and say who last edited the post.  :icon_rolleyes:

are you following scratch's excellent directions when you fill up?

(knock off the easy ones before we start thinking the fuel pickup hose is in the wrong place)
edit: what i meant to say was: just making sure you're looking into the tank to make sure you're filling it up, and not just sticking the nozzle all the way in and putting gas in until it stops.

I have the same problem, The most I ever got in was 3 gallons, that was on the center stand topping it off. I also can only get about 120 miles before it acts like it's low on gas. I'm going to be trying a petcock mod and some fuel system work to see if I can solve this. My understanding is that it's a petcock vacuum issue... I don't know what the fuel level has to do with activating the problem, though.
