Ok I changed my oil today, Pretty damn easy once I got the right socket size.

but I used a drain pan from auto zone and when it was draining I thought that it was a lotttt of oil.  Well, after I finished, I put the drained oil in a 1 gallon milk jug,  but it was only about a quart of oil in the milk jug....  I had the stealership do my first service since it was the most important one, so this is my second,   I dont think that I have a leak or anything, cuz I checked it over and there was nothing to raise suspition

So my question is, is it normal to loose that much oil, or did the dealership not put enough in there

Kerry

Losing 2 out of 3 quarts is NOT normal. :o  Between oil changes I usually lose less than the amount between the F and L marks on the dipstick.  (I "top off" a time or two, but I don't pour much in at all each time.)

For a better estimation of the amount that drained out, pour the used oil into the empty bottles that the new oil came in.  After 2 changes you can take the 6-quart case of used oil to an auto parts store for dumping.  That way they know exactly what it is that you want to dump, and how much you've got.

well it was an estimation but it wasnt much more than a Quarter of a Gallon.  "Hence a quart"

Uh... did you change the filter? There's a lot in there...

no i didnt i was told that it wasnt needed until the third change by the guy at the dealership

i replace everything every oild change.  Still that compartment doesn't hold a quart of oil and even if it did one quart between changes is still a lot unless you have a really oil or neglected bike with piston ring problems.  make sure that it is full but not over full on oil and monitor it.  If it continues and the dealer just didn't f'up then it needs a little attention.

Good advice,

Thanks

Yeah, personally I change my oil *filter* every other oil change. I run synthetic and change it at every 3k.

Anyway, are you sure your measurements are right? They didn't sound very exact: "about a quart". Did you measure it? Sometimes what looks like "about a quart" could be more or less than you might expect.

Also, you did have the bike on it's center stand to change the oil right? And you run it for a while so the oil was warm and could come out easily before you opened the plug?  :dunno_white:

edit: fixed  :icon_razz:

this certainly aint a half gallon

and yes I had ridden for about an hour, then let it cool for about 30 minutes then changed it

red_phil

According to mr Haynes.

you'll get :
2.6 Litres out in a normal oil change.
2.9 litres if you change the filter as well.
3.2 litres is if you take the engine apart.

So that's .3 litres in the oil filter.

Was the bike on the centre stand or side stand when you did drained the oil?

rangerbrown

i take it you did it on the side stand.

yea check your oil befor rides, the gs is known to burn oil, (air cooled) i dotn seem to burn any at all. really.
alph, thatguy, and others there at the gap were smoken good when they were on it hard, i am not sure about my self, that smoke is oil.

will this cause damage to my bike,

I sifted throught the sludge, but I didnt find much solid particles

I would estimate that you were about a quart low, considering that you didn't change the filter, and you wouldn't have gotten it all out of the drain pan.  Be sure to check the oil regularly and monitor its level.  Oh, and be sure and do it on the center stand next time, mmm'kay?

My GS has never used any oil since I've owned it. But a few weeks ago the oil mysteriously dropped from the upper mark to the lower mark after about a half a tank of fuel. It hasn't done that since but I've heard other people complaining of the exact same thing. I'm thinking maybe the valve seals are leaking when the conditions are right.
