First off, i'm getting ready to order the regulator and pump now to do the swap next week, and the online parts places list two different part numbers for the regulators for 1989??? Any way of knowing which one i need without having the bike here and apart? Is it likely to even matter the block and oil pump is the same?

Also is there anything i need to know or tips i should have when doing this swap?

I have got a tip for you, its dead simple, its guaranteed to make the job easier and reduce the risk of mistakes. GET A WORKSHOP MANUAL, read it, then..... READ IT AGAIN! Identify and order all the replacement parts you will need, (dont forget gaskets) and ensure you have all the tools you will need to hand when you start the job. I think the pump drive gear is held onto the pump shaft with an external circlip so you will need a pair of suitable circlip-pliers to remove it without damaging it. Phone the parts supplier and quote the chassis number of the bike, they then should then be able to identify which pump is fitted. Have you now got a figure for oil-pressure or are you guessing the pump/gasket is faulty?
